Hürrem Sultan or Roxelana was the favorite wife of Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. She gained a remarkable reputation between Turkish people and is considered one of the most powerful and influential women in the Ottoman history. She reached the power and influenced the politics of the Ottoman Empire. Being a grey eminence, she played an active role in state affairs of the Empire. But only a few know she had a Ukrainian origin. She had to “get into” the second nature to become who she became on the international arena. Who knows, maybe this explosive combination of traditional Ukrainian woman’ traits and an imposed eastern culture helped her to become such a prominent figure of two countries.  In this article, the author tells about a Ukrainian woman as an embodiment of mutually exclusive characteristics. However, she manages to have them all.

1.    A caring control freak vs. a reliable partner.

A Ukrainian woman is a very caring person.  She cares that’s why she controls. She controls too much. This attitude drives people crazy. She wants to know why, where, with whom. She sets diagnoses and provides a special treatment. This is how she starts a process and sees it to completion.  She never neglects details and remembers everything.  There is a certain need to be aware of everything that is going on under her nose.  This is necessary because she needs the right opportunity to intervene. When people say it annoys them, she gets insulted because she can’t understand why they don’t accept her help.

At the same time, when the time is tough, she’ll be there for you.  She won’t escape, abandon, or ignore. She will fight with you and for you. You can always rely on her. She is extremely supportive and empathic.

2.    An open-hearted hostess vs. an overprotecting mama-bear.

A Ukrainian family is extremely hospitable. A hostess’ sacred duty is to feed her guests with the best dishes she can ever cook.  She wants people to feel comfortable in the house. She’ll provide the best blankets, towels, etc. All you need is to let her know you notice all her efforts.

An overprotecting mama-bear appears when she wants to isolate her family from an external influence. It is not always for the right reasons.  The rest of the family may not agree with such a weird behavior. She may ask not to share any personal information, not to speak out for neighbors not to hear anything, etc. She acts like a spy. She thinks this is how she protects her family from the jealousy and haters.

3.    Self-critical vs. confident.

A Ukrainian woman is self-critical because of high standards she establishes, first of all, toward herself.  It’s not always the inferiority complex. You’ll notice that if she says: “I look horrible”. This is how she apologizes for not being divinely perfect.

If she is sure she looks good, you’ll feel her confidence in every single word, action, and gesture.

She is also confident in her assuming. Sometimes it’s ridiculous, but she will prove you’re wrong because she is 100% sure.  Her confidence pops up when she admits, announces, informs, confirms, etc. A lot of men find it extremely sexy.

4.    Brave in a house vs. at the table a mouse.

There is a Russian proverb saying “she can stop a running horse and burst into a burning house”. Somehow, it is so true – she can be Xena, a Warrior Princess. A Ukrainian woman used to be strong and brave in the war, at home, on a professional field. Why on a professional field? The opportunities are not equal. The court, the OR, and the morgue never frighten her. She is a tough nut when it’s about her family.

In the meantime, she is a fragile creature and it’s easy to hurt her.  She is like a flower with a nuclear potential. A Ukrainian woman is often hurt by sons, husbands, but she humbly forgives and gives the second chance. She can be calm, speechless, and humble when her man speaks. This is how she shows her respect and recognition.

5. A money waster vs. a finance minister.

There are so many jokes about a Ukrainian woman breaking the bank while shopping and helping her husband, a billionaire, to become a millionaire. This is true. But her financial behavior depends on the education and… on the sponsor. If she sees she can play tricks with him, she does it. If she sees she can play tricks with him, however, she doesn’t because her education and moral values do not allow. 

A Ukrainian woman is able to make some beautiful accessory with inexpensive means. Also, she knows to sew. This is significantly cheaper than buying clothes. She can be a good accountant, a perfect finance minister. She is able to anticipate the budget and keep it.

6.    Career-oriented vs. family-oriented.

The family is used to being the most precious thing of a Ukrainian woman’s life. Home means the world to her.  Women in Ukraine are still growing up with the idea that her primary calling is to get married and give birth. She is getting ready for so long before she actually gets married.

However, there are career-oriented women in the country. It depends on the region. Thus, the Center and the East are more “civilized”. Of course, having a family is part of their life plans, but it’s not their hub. They strive for more: career, recognition, achievements, etc. These women are independent and self-sufficient. They won’t die if you split up.

7.    A prophet and a financial advisor vs. a shallow little hottie.

If you know what NASDAQ is, she sets up a goal to get to know what it is too.  She uses her innate understanding of every single situation and uses it to give advice even if she is not asked for.

A shallow hottie may appear purposefully. She may need something so she plays a “little shallow hottie”.  Or she is really a little shallow hottie.A man’s task is not to be confused because his active assets may become passive ones.

8.    A morality carrier vs. a vice incarnation. 

Being grown up in a Christian country, a Ukrainian woman tends to stick to common moral values.  Of course, feminism and emancipation affected the Ukrainian society.  The European Union with its human approach impacted a women’s mind. A Ukrainian woman was set free in some way.  On the one hand, she is still “that woman”, on the other hand, she learned to stand up for her rights, fight for her beliefs, and not to involve a man in such crucial life and game changing decisions as conception, delivery, parenting, etc.

She tackles on her own different problems a man used to.  Nowadays she drinks, consumes drugs, has abortions because she thinks her moral values allow her.

9.    An inspirational trigger vs. an energy vampire.

She can inspire her man, give him innate strength, self-confidence; she encourages and sets fire. But she also takes, sips, encroaches…  The role depends on lots of factors: her man’s attitude, her mood, and her purpose. If she loves, she will give you wings; if she hates, she will be sipping the energy from your soul till you leave one day. 

She can be the greatest person in the world when she loves; she can be a thorn in a side if she nurses a grudge.

10.    A gossiping chatterbox vs. a wise woman of tact.

“She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness” (Proverbs 31:26; King’s Games Version). These words belong to the King Salomon. He said this kind of a woman is like a treasure because she can “tame” her tongue.

A Ukrainian woman’s tongue is a great weapon. It can destroy and restore, bless and curse, hurt and heal. It depends on different factors such as her educations, values, mood, attitude toward a concrete person, etc. 

Also, she can be both. Again, all depend on the purpose. Anyway, she can be whoever and whatever she needs to be if the situation requires.

Being with a Ukrainian woman is not a danger, it’s an adventure. Her inconveniences, as well as her benefits, can be a blessing or a curse depending on how her man behaves. One thing must be understood for sure: the way a Ukrainian woman acts is a litmus test of how her man acts. So doing right by her is a must for a man, especially a stranger.
