Moving out is exciting – finally having your own home comes with independence but also a lot you need to organise. Transporting your furniture to the flat, buying new goods, and potentially renovating bits and pieces here and there can be quite time-consuming.

Here is a guide on how you will get the most out of your flat by organising things you may not have thought of before.

Organise Your Mail

It's essential that you sort out your mail before you change places, especially when it's not your parent's house you are moving out from. You don't want to miss out on bills that don't get delivered to your new address. If you know that you are expecting any important post, make sure that you redirect your mail. It's a bit expensive, so you should try to avoid arranging any urgent deliveries before you move out.

So that your mail arrives at the right place, you will need to review all the bills that run in your name. That can take a while, especially as you probably don't have a list ready with all of them. However, this is crucial as unpaid bills can hurt your credit record. It can have a negative impact for you in the future as for example banks will check your credit report and may not hand out a credit card to you.

Sort Out the Council Tax

Once you moved into your new flat, you will need to tell your local authorities as you will have to start paying council tax. This tax ensures that local services such as the police, libraries or waste collection can be funded.

You can check if you get a discount or reduction on the council tax. For example, if you are a student, you won't need to pay for council tax.

Protect Your Possessions

You might think that nothing serious will ever happen to your flat, but once someone breaks into your flat or something sets on fire, you will regret not purchasing a contents insurance beforehand. While it's your landlord's responsibility to cover your flat with home insurance, you can protect your belongings with contents insurance.

You are not legally obliged to have this sort of insurance, but since its relatively cheap, you might want to invest in one.

Order Wi-Fi

Even if you have a good phone contract with lots of free mobile data, you can't use a hotspot for streaming all the time. If you stream something on Netflix at medium quality, it will use 0.7 GB an hour. That adds up quickly, and you might not have enough data to get through the month.

As soon as you know the exact date when you will move out, you can arrange a broadband contract. If you already have one, you can call the customer service and tell them about your new address. Otherwise, you can compare different providers and their regular offers but also if they are available in your area. If you need an electrician to install your Wi-Fi, it can sometimes take a while until they can visit you. So, if you sort out the broadband before you move in, you will save a lot of your mobile data.

Next to all this, there is a lot of other stuff you need to organise. However, this article will have probably given you an idea of some of the most important things you will need to take care of before you move out.

Once all this is sorted out, you can focus on the nice part of your new home – designing it the way you want it to be and enjoying the new freedom.
