1. Get an accent

Something you see in a lot of popular kitchen designs is an accent wall, which is basically a wall painted a different colour from the rest of the room. Painting a single wall instead of the entire kitchen is the quickest and cheapest way to switch things up and breathe new life into your old kitchen. Go darker than you usually would and make sure your accent wall is at least two shades darker than the others. The wall to accent is generally the first thing you see when you walk into the room and for maximum impact, consider painting an accent wall and all the shelving on it the same colour as well.

2. New handles and knobs

These are the cheapest and easiest things to upgrade in your kitchen and ones that stand out the most. There’s nothing like shiny new handles to make your drawers and cabinets pop, even if the paint or finishing of the drawers themselves are rather dull. There’s nothing like good old brass or nickel but colourful options are interesting too. When you’re going with colours make sure to get something neutral that will match with all the popular kitchen designs. Resist the temptation to get anything too personalised as these tend to stick out like sore thumbs.

3. Put a rug on it

Putting a rug on the floor in front of your kitchen sink is a quick way add value to the space and is something you see a lot especially in online kitchen designs. It not only makes it more comfortable to walk to stand around doing dishes, it also adds a splash of colour to your floor. That particular area of the kitchen is also the most likely to get wet so having a rug there saves you a lot of hassle of having to mop up after yourself. Try and get something that goes with your colour scheme, is durable and easy to wash.

4. Paint your cabinets

A big part of modular kitchen price tags are the cabinets, kitchen cabinets are expensive, this is mostly because they’re a onetime investment and kitchen cabinets aren’t something you change out every year. The up side to that is that they’re mostly well-built and all you need to make yours pop again are a few coats of paint. A fresh coat of paint on your cabinetry can do wonders for you kitchen, go with bright colours like yellows and greens and reds if you have black countertops, especially if you want to brighten things up.

5. Go with glass

Glass just looks cool and if your old cabinet doors are just too far gone to paint, replacing them with glass is the best thing you could do. You could even go with an open look and ditch the doors altogether though you’d need to make sure the stuff on your shelves are “display worthy.” Glass doors on your cabinets not only look modern, they’re a lot easier to clean and maintain and make your kitchen look a lot bigger too.

6. Lights can change everything

It’s almost like magic what the right kind of lighting can do for your kitchen and if you want the quickest most sure fire way to transform any living are for that matter, get new lights! Lights don’t have to be expensive and there are lots of cheap pendant lights that you can buy online and hang in your kitchen for a quick transformation. Remember how much light you need to cook with so make sure you don’t get anything too dim or too colourful.

7. Everything is an accessory

This is an interesting concept and involves thinking of everything that’s visible in your kitchen, from the sugar jar to the hand towels as a decorative item. This obviously means no greasy bowls and finger print covered jars lying around, but it’s a great way to get the most value out of your items. Small appliances fall under this category and think about that when you buy them, get ones that go with your entire colour scheme so every little thing looks like it’s all tie together and part of a bigger picture.

8. Spruce with drapes

Drapes pretty much control how the light enters your living space so deciding what kind of curtains you’re going to get is a big decision. You don’t want something really fancy that’s going to get ruined with fumes and splashes and at the same time you want something that will add value to the space. A neat hack is to buy shower curtains and then cut them to fit your kitchen window, they’re easy to clean and available in all sorts of shades and colours. Shades are a good option too especially the ones made of bamboo that you can roll up or roll down as you please.

9. Laminate your countertops

Buying new granite countertops can cost an arm and a leg but laminating your existing ones are a lot cheaper than you think. Countertops are like the crown jewel of your kitchen and almost the first thing that catches the eye. New laminate surfaces don’t cost more than a few hundred dollars and you can choose from loads of finishes like stone, marble, wood, granite and a lot more.

10. Add some art

Modular kitchens are not just convenient, they also look great, and this is largely due to the well thought out designs, attention to detail, colour combinations and art work. You can make yours look great too, minus the modular kitchen price tag, by using some artwork to elevate your room. It not only gives an illusion of a bigger space, but gives you something to look at while you work. It doesn’t have be a Picasso and a simple framed picture can do the trick, just make sure to put it somewhere it won’t get splashed.
