A Pain Management Clinic Is A Great Source Of Help After An Auto Accident

car crash

Have you ever been involved in a vehicle accident and you weren’t sure what type of doctor to see about your injuries and the pain you’re having from those injuries? Were you having symptoms common with a vehicle accident like back pain, headaches, knees, shoulder, or spine pains? Did you know how to file an insurance claim with the other party’s or your own insurance? These are things that the staff in a pain management clinic can assist you once you have been admitted.

But until you do seek help, these can all be confusing matters, especially right after an accident happens. And many times, immediately afterwards not everyone will experience obvious injuries like broken bones, bruises, or cuts, but they will experience some uneasiness, but in general, they feel okay. Later on, though sometimes few days later, even weeks later, they start to experience some pain but aren’t 100% sure it is the results of the recent accident.

Why Does Pain Take So Long To Set In?

While you may not need to be admitted to a pain management clinic immediately, a vehicle accident can be a traumatic experience which causes the body to emit a natural substance known as adrenalin, a painkiller. As a natural painkiller, adrenaline masks any immediate pain that you would feel after a traumatic injury. But then as it wears off slowly, you will start to notice the effects of the accident.

Back Pain and Neck Pain

After a vehicle accident, the most affected areas of the human body are the back and the neck. The list of possible injuries to the back and neck are endless, including herniated discs or slipped discs, compression fractures or damage to the spinal cord. These types of back injuries can cause the most severe pain that is debilitating and be so bad that it is impossible to perform daily activities around the house or even work.

This is why, whether you feel or notice any injury after a vehicle accident, it is recommended to go the hospital and be examined. And if you do notice an injury or have pain immediately following a vehicle accident, go directly to the hospital.

There they will take x-ray’s looking for broken bones and fractures as well as a general examination of bruises or cuts. They will suture any cuts as well and then prescribe pain medication with the advice to follow up with your own physician the next day.

After The ER Visit

After you leave the ER with bandages and stitches, or nothing at all, what should you do next? Well, you definitely should do as they instruct and follow up with your own physician.  But what if you are starting to experience some serious discomfort and pain? You will want to let your doctor know this when you make your appointment and when you get to your appointment for starters.

They will do an examination, possibly more x-rays or they will request the records and x-rays from the hospital and work from those.  Should your doctor find or suspect back or neck injury, they will refer you to a specialist for each of the areas of you may have injured.

Today, though, you won’t be referred to several specialists, requiring you to schedule several appointments. You will most likely be referred to a pain management clinic. Here they will perform an MRI test which can provide a clearer picture than x-rays do. The complete specialist team here will exam your MRI and may order additional testing to be done depending on the type of injury you have, the type of pain and where the pain is.

By receiving coordinated care between the specialists there, it will be easier and quicker to get the treatment you need and get you back to your normal lifestyle. The specialists are able to confer with one another on your progress and keep better communication on the type of medications you are prescribed.
