Getting the Most out of the Road

Summer is here! We all know what that means. Time for a road trip! Road tripping can be an economical and fun way to get outside, play in nature, and go on an old fashioned adventure. For some getting lost on a desolate road is one of life's greatest pleasures. For others, the idea of sitting in a car can be akin to going to the dentist and getting teeth pulled. They will avoid it at all costs. Here are a few tips for making your next road trip appealing to everyone.
Snacks
Get a cooler and fill it to the brim with beverages and snacks. Keep the cooler handy and have it close by so you do not have to stop the car and rummage through the back just to get something to eat. Be sure to pack that thing full of ice so a nice cold soda or iced tea is ready at all times. Having refreshments available can be the difference between comfort and are we there yet.
Music
On a solo road trip? No problem bring your favorite tunes. Going with some buddies or a significant other? Be sure to bring a playlist that everyone can agree on. Some great ideas are general background music without words, classical, or even stand-up comedy. Checking out local radio stations can be fun, but when very rural expect religious and country to dominate the airwaves. Satellite radio is also a great option as you will get radio even if your phone has no service and the FM is nothing but static.
Comfort
Being comfortable on a road trip is very important, especially as a passenger. Bring a pillow, some blankets and get cozy. Be sure to dress appropriately for the weather and always bring a jacket and some cold-weather gear in case the weather changes or you happen to get stranded somewhere. Another great idea if this is going to be a multi-day trip is to bring a truck mattress. These smaller mattresses can be a great place to sleep or to lounge on while taking breaks from driving.
Safety
As mentioned in the previous paragraph it is important to bring cold-weather gear in case you get stranded somewhere along the way. Another great idea that also gives peace of mind is to bring a roadside emergency kit. At the very least you should carry some basic tools, flat repair in a can, and some jumper cables. Although a full-fledged kit would be more useful in the event that it is needed. Some great things to carry are flares or cones, a flashlight, gloves, and a first aid kit. A little preparation can go along way and it is always better to have an item and not need it than to need it and not have it.
Maps
Believe it or not, there are still places left in the world that do not have cell service. In that regard, it is best to carry a paper map of where you are going. Be sure to also know how to read the said map. This simple skill can get you out of a jam that you never anticipated before heading out onto the road.
In conclusion, road trips can be an awesome way to see the country and enjoy some time alone or with friends. Just remember that a bit of planning can help you to get the most out of the road and your trip. Hopefully, these tips will make even the timidest road tripper happy out there on the open road. Have fun out there, be safe, be prepared, and buckle up!
