Honey is known to have analgesic, anti-oxidant and anti-microbial properties which reduces the mucus and hence results in a soothing effect and relief on the throat. The easiest way to take honey is to mix it with a cup of warm milk. Honey is an excellent alternative home remedy to treat frequent cough in adults and children.

Ginger - Ginger is known to have anti-inflammatory and natural analgesic properties and hence helps soothe irritation and scratchiness caused due to sore throat. It acts as a cleansing agent for the entire respiratory system. You can consume ginger by cutting it into small pieces and removing the juice out of it. You can have one spoon of this daily with a little honey for quick relief.

Turmeric - Turmeric contains the ingredient curcumin, which has strong anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Due to these properties, Curcumin is very effective in treating cough, cold and various other viral infections. You can take a teaspoon of turmeric powder and mix it up with an equal amount of carom seeds. Add this mixture to boiling water and boil it to half its quantity. You can take this thrice a day with a little honey. The easiest way to is to have turmeric milk daily before going to bed for infection free throat.

Salt water gargle - One of the most commonly used home remedies is to do warm salt water gargle. Salt water helps treat sore throat through osmosis and it is also very effective in a dry cough. This works because the salt inside the cells of your mucous membranes flows out to balance the salt outside of the cells, and this will reduce swelling. Take one spoon of salt and mix it in a glass of warm water. Gargle with the same three to four times and rinse your mouth with plain water after finishing the gargle.

Garlic - Garlic is one of the most ancient natural cures for coughs. The active compound allicin in garlic has anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral properties. Garlic is also known to boost the overall immunity system. You can add a couple of garlic cloves in a glass of warm water and boil it. You can have this mixture with honey once cooled.
