Be Empathetic Not Sympathetic There is an important distinction between sympathy and empathy that is often confused. In sympathy, we often try to take on the burden of those in feeling their way through an emotional issue. Expressing sympathy can actually accentuate a victim state of mind and is less likely to empower someone to resolve a self-limiting point of view. When we’re empathetic, we let other feel their feelings and express their concerns, trusting that what they need to take their next step is available somewhere close at hand if they are open to seeing it and receiving it.
