Today's interest in pirates is driven by popular films on recent release starring Johny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. Such films have driven the demand for the pirate costume. However the history of pirates is fascinating. A pirate made his living through his piracy and used weapons as his tools. So guns and swords were as important to him as the treasure itself. They always made sure their weapons were working because in battle their life depended on them.

Today's great love of the pirate costume derived from the notoriety of the pirates. Pirates loved to attack other ships on the high seas. But many had special jobs to carry out on board their own vessels. Listed below are a few of these tasks.

The buccaneers were pirates who lived on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola and in the 1600's, they attacked any Spanish ships heading back to Spain from South America, which were mostly laden with treasure. They took over many of the Caribbean islands and used them as a base to travel all over the world. If you take a look at their dress, you will see cutlasses and head scarves that are so well depicted in today's pirate costume outfits.

'Where does he get those wonderful toys?' This was a very good question indeed. It was asked by The Joker (aka Jack Nicholson) in the 1989 'Batman' movie directed by the masterful Tim Burton.

An attractive accessory to your Halloween costume this year, would be a well designed pumpkin. Select one with no bruises or spots, because it will last longer. The difficulty when selecting, is we usually see a pumpkin as a large face. So for example, you might pick one that a family member always bought and carved out in to a grinner. Maybe you go for the oddly shaped one that needs looking after. You can see how they start to take on a life of their own.

In May 1939 'Detective Comics' created a character that would go on to become a household name not just in America but all over the world. That character was Batman (aka 'The Dark Knight' and 'The Caped Crusader'). Over the last seventy years he has starred in numerous comics, graphic novels, books, movies and video games. During this time the Batman persona has, in most ways, remained much the same since his conception.

If you go to a fancy dress party and look for someone who has dressed up as a superhero for the evening then you can be pretty sure that it will be a Batman costume that you see. Out of all of the comic strip heroes from over the years few have had quite the same appeal as Batman. Of course, you are bound to come across the odd Superman but the Caped Crusader just seems to have a greater overall appeal.

Adults as well as children celebrate Halloween in many unusual ways. Take for example, a lady in Detroit, who waits for the school bus to leave her house on the morning of Halloween. She then sets to work on her front garden. When the bus returns the children are amazed to see it transformed with gravestones, monsters and ghosts.

In the sixties when I was a child, it was the night of Halloween that I loved the most. When darkness had fallen, we would lather windows with soap, and ring peoples' doorbells, usually in our Halloween costumes.

No need to spend on elaborate Halloween costumes this season. For this Halloween party game you will need newspapers and blindfolds. If your guests are too easily frightened then this game would not be suitable for your party. As you will know, Moriarty is from the Sherlock Holmes novels and our professor will be re-enacting people's life and death struggles at Reichenbauch, via role play.

Over the past few years, more and more people that are getting married are choosing themed weddings. Some of them get hitched in a forest with everyone dressed in medieval clothes. Others might opt for a science fiction feel and get everyone to wear Star Wars outfits. It might all sound a bit silly to you but if you both like something then it can be really nice to use it as a theme for your big day.
