Scare-mongering must be a profitable business. How else can we explain the plethora of apocalyptic environmental news that spews forth in the shape of news releases, “reports” and “scientific” papers all calling for “urgent action” before the world meets an impending calamitous end! But, global warming preachers have had a shocking 2008 as so many of their predictions this year have gone cold like the early winter storms that have hit the eastern seaboard in the United States.

A severe winter storm of ice and snow hit many parts of the United States in the past week, causing highway closures, flight delays, massive blackouts and at least one death. The weather was frightful from Portland, Maine, to Portland, Ore., on Monday, with last-minute holiday shoppers shivering and stranded travelers hoping for the best over the Christmas season. The little town of Eustis, Maine, got nearly 3 1/2 feet of snow.

2008 was a crazy year! Apart from the global financial crisis, this was the year that saw the green tinged madness of hyperventilating green loonies at their worst with their deliberate panic inducing allegations of melting polar ice to the potential extinction of polar bears to Olympic smog in Beijing! You can be excused if you think that the world was losing its collective mind along with the loonies!

Polar bears have often been called the “canaries of climate change”, referring obviously to the practice of miners in times past to bring a canary along upon descent into the coals as a test for air quality. There is no shortage of doom-laden reports about the bears’ imminent demise on our warming planet. Indeed, so strong is the misery-mongering about polar bears that the US is currently trying to list them as an endangered species; and its campaign has been aided and abetted by several...

Global warming is a multi-billion dollar industry! The most expensive secret you’re not supposed to know is that George W. Bush leaves office with the planet cooler than when he entered. This dangerous trend threatens the multi-billion dollar “global warming” industry, adding new urgency to the ritual shriek of “we must act now!” in the scramble to impose a costly regime of mandates and energy taxes.

Dramatically portrayed as the greatest crisis in the history of civilization, global warming has had some bad press. Stories on it occupy the front pages of prominent news magazines such as Time and Newsweek and are featured prominently in countless media around the world. The question that the Palm Oil Truth Foundation would like asked is whether such hysteria and headlong spending on extravagant CO2 cutting programs at exorbitant prices is the correct response.

It has taken a global economic crisis for common sense to prevail and take root in the environmental debate, long hijacked by the irrational and the hysterical. It has provided an overwhelming case for reassessing where our policy priorities should lie if we are genuinely concerned with world welfare.

There are no simple problems in the world of the zealot. Everything is a crisis, epidemic, disaster or catastrophe. There is always the need for urgent action, which usually means taxation, authoritarian control and further loss of liberty.

It was the famous libertarian, HL Mencken who said: The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

The extinction of the woolly mammoth piles on the evidence that the alarmist cries of the current environmental movement on deforestation and global warming is based more on hyperbole than fact. It will be observed that global warming was already a cyclical occurrence at the end of the Pleistocene period, centuries before the agricultural and industrial revolutions used by the environmental movement and the likes of Greenpeace and FOE as leading causes of global warming.

When environmentalist Kevin Dunion decided to write a book on what he perceives is environmental justice in Scotland, he chose the rather curious title “Troublemakers”, which Dunion alleges, is how most environmentalists are perceived by the world at large. This unsavory reputation is so all-pervasive that it is difficult for the environmental movement to shake it off.

I have often wondered about the mind and the psyche behind the radical environmentalist and the eco-terrorist. What drives the Greenpeacers and the FOEers to do the things that they do, and how do they justify their often mystifying positions and actions? To my mind, their actions often border on the asinine and are often similar and reflective of the actions of juvenile delinquents and other deviants of society.

Just what motivates the United Nations International Panel on Climate Control to selectively cherry pick their data to support the contention that we must stop the industrial age and return to the horse and buggy era?

Environmental organizations have a penchant for saying that not only is global warming happening and bad, but also that what we are seeing is even worse than expected?
