If you happen to be a private pilot who is looking to add an Instrument Rating to your certificate, then you may already be aware of the fact that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) allows you to apply up to a maximum of 20 instructor-led hours of time in training in an instrument flight simulator to be applied as credit toward your instrument rating. Of course you can spend more than 20 hours training on a simulator, but only the first 20 hours will apply, and all of those 20 must be spent with an instructor and not solo, using an FAA approved flight simulation program.

We have all seen those movie or TV skits in which the pilot of an aircraft passes out in mid-flight, and the stewardesses must scramble to find a passenger on board who happens to have any type of flight experience who might be able to take over the controls and land the plane safely at the nearest airport. Why is it that the only passenger on board with any type flight experience always happens to be someone whose only experience piloting aircraft was by playing around with a flight training simulator?

It was not all that long ago that flight simulations were very simplistic in nature. Now, as computer design has evolved, flight simulators, such as those for a Cessna 172, are highly detailed.
