One of the most overlooked parts of any home theater system is the cables which can be safely hidden out of view behind the telly or buried inside a cabinet. While most people are so concerned about the look and size the television, which is the focal point of the system, you can find important things hiding out of sight.
The cables and wires usually are an afterthought, and often are merely included with the devices that you are connecting together. But it is worth looking at what wires and cables are included because they probably won't optimize the picture or sound in the device. Take the Sony Playstation 3 slim for example. The Playstation 3 is really a high tech device that is capable of playing high definition games and DVD's as well as Blu-rays; but it is missing one important ingredient that makes it high definition.
It does not feature an HDMI cable which is required for a high definition picture and the best sound available at the second. It comes with some really nice component cables, however they are not really what you need. So, here you have all this high definition, advanced gear and can't utilize it to its full potential. Why spend all the money getting the best equipment if you're not going to take advantage of what you have paid for?
If you don't browse the box and don't know that such a crucial piece of equipment is not included, then you'll have to make the frustratingly infuriating drive back to the store to get them after you tear open the box, eagerly anticipate your high definition gaming to come. So you hop back in the car and curse Sony all the way back to the store. The point of the story is to be prepared and know what you need to take full advantage of your new hardware.
The previous fashioned component cable just doesn't work anymore. That is why all of the new equipment incorporates multiple HDMI inputs on each device. You want to make sure that any television has multiple HDMI inputs before you purchase it. Newer models will in all probability have them, but it is always good to test how many. Most people will want at the very least three, one for the cable or satellite, one for surround sound and at least one more for some component such as a PS3 or blu-ray player.
