The SAD diet refers to what's known as the Standard American Diet. This isn't diet as in weight loss but diet as in the foods that are consumed on a regular basis. The closer you are to the SAD diet the worse off your weight loss efforts will be. What is wrong with the Standard American Diet?

Low in plant based foods.

Typically plant based foods are some of the least consumed parts of this type of diet. The problem with this is that plant based foods tend to have more nutrition compared to any other type of food. One theory is that those eating the SAD diet typically overeat because their bodies are wanting more nutrition which should be coming from plant foods.

High in fats.

These fats can come from animal meat or from other sources of fats like grease. Fat can be a good thing within reason. Eating a diet that's constantly high in fat each meal will only add to weight gaining problems.

High in sugar.

Since much of the SAD diet is typically processed foods versus natural foods, there is quite a bit of sugar in the diet. This is not only white refined sugar but also high fructose corn syrup. Look at the labels of most food products and you will notice that either sugar or corn syrup is in these. Sugar like fat can be good but in excess is not.

One of the easiest ways to get off the SAD diet is to replace natural foods in place of sugary and fatty foods. Although almost cliche, shop on the edges of the grocery store more than the middle.
