What You Can Expect From Hiring A Magician
When it comes to hiring a magician for a corporate event, you need to know exactly what you'll be getting from your magician, and he needs to know what to expect from you. Here is a simple list of some things a magician will do and some he won't.
Tricks
A lot of people expect the huge, David Blaine-like magic tricks, but many magicians don't have the resources or the venue to perform them. Illusions done by the likes of Houdini took years to perfect and were planned to be performed in front of thousands, while most professional magicians have programs that are designed for smaller venues.
That's another consideration: your venue. Some locations just aren't set up for some tricks. A magician might need a trap door and crawl space under the stage, for example, and if your venue doesn't provide that, then the magician will have to omit that illusion from their program. This is why it's so important to get a very good idea of exactly what the magician needs and what your venue has to offer so you can change locations if you need to.
Shows
Some magicians are available for both stage shows and walkround events. The stage show is obviously going to include larger tricks since the magician will have a backstage area and other resources on hand. However, hiring a magician to do a walkround at a meet and greet can be a lot of fun. Just be sure you know how much the magician charges for each event and that you're both clear on when he will be performing.
What You Need to Provide
Your magician will provide all the props and such that he needs, but you may be expected to provide lighting, sound equipment, or other items. Again, communicate with your magician to find out exactly what he needs.
You should also expect to provide a backstage area or a separate dressing room for the magician to get ready in. You should include some bottled water and maybe even a light snack in the room, and water should be available on the stage during the performance.
If the magician is performing before, after, or during a meal, you should make certain he and his staff have time to eat. If you're catering the meal, it's a nice gesture to pay for the magician's dinner.
The Show Itself
After all the details are taken care of, what can you expect a magician to provide as far as entertainment goes? A lively, fun show for all ages and types of people! There will be audience participation (especially in the walkround shows), plenty of amazement, and, overall, a sense of wonder and enjoyment that will cast a magic spell over your entire event.
