Some people like having what are called bug out locations that they could go to during a disaster type situation. These retreats have some food, water, provide shelter, and give them a place that they can go to that will help them escape whatever problems are caused by the disaster.

For the most part, you might not end up ever using it as a survival location but it is nice to have. If you are going to make the investment to get a bug out retreat like this, make sure you consider all the possibilities.

Get a place that is somewhat close to a smaller community. While you are wanting to avoid masses of people to remain safer, it's also good to have a community. When you visit your retreat to camp out or enjoy nature, you have close stores to grab supplies if needed. You place can still be secluded enough that people don't have to know where it is.

Make sure you have a fence of some sorts. People have a tendency to walk on other's land. Many are looking to steal. Without a fence many will make the lame excuse that they got lost and are looking for a way out. Fences will tend to keep your supplies and bug out shelter a bit safer. During a real emergency a fence is a bit more defense.

You might have utilities or you might not. If you don't have connected utilities, be sure you have planned ways of getting energy and a water supply. Make sure you have some backups too for these as they are needed in most cases.

Also be sure the road to your location is passable at all times of the year. Sometimes these old county roads will be flooded for months making getting to your location difficult. Be sure you check out the roads and ask around to make sure that you can pass on that road on all days of the year.
