In these cases, i.d.s are stole and the thief can actually assume the identity of the victim. From there, this thief can establish a line of credit, attend college, work and live what appears to be a normal life all under an assumed name. So what really happens when one’s identity is stolen?
When identity theft occurs, many people find themselves in a deep hole. Most of the time, the main factor is money, which means the person whose identity was stolen will lose a good deal of it. Many people have found it necessary to file bankruptcy when this occurs.
If you suspect your identity has been stolen, or if any important information is missing, notify someone as soon as possible. If credit cards have been stolen, cancel them ASAP. If money is missing from your bank account, call the bank to find out where it went and when the transaction took place. Voice your suspicions to someone at the bank so they may begin looking into the matter as soon as possible. While you may not be able to prevent identity theft, there is much you can do to better your chances of it not happening to you.
