When we want to lose weight, many people simply cut back on our food, or run a few miles, and in a couple of weeks, we have lost the 5-8 pounds we wanted to. At least that is ow it is for some people. Not me though...as an obese woman, obese for decades, if it had been that easy, I would have done it the FIRST time I was given a dirty look, or called a nasty name. No, it simply isn't that easy for many of us.

For those of us that are obese, we have to find more permanent ways of changing our behavior from taking in so many extra calories that we have accumulated 100 or more pounds of fat on our bodies. We also need a different kind of support.

Seeing normally hyper-thin actresses or models don a "fat suit" so they can experience the hostility and prejudice that obese people receive daily NEVER equates to understanding. Being told by a well-toned man or woman who has never been more than 15 pounds heavy that they have "fought a weight problem" all of their life, comes across as patronizing and can border on cruelty.

In my experience, the obese aren't actually interested in a six-pack stomach - we are interested in losing 100, 200, even 400 pounds of fat so we can move, and so we can live a normal life and play with our children or our grandchildren. For the obese, weight loss coaching or counseling can equal a ticket out of a dark, lonely place.

Of course, changing any habit or behavior takes effort, and being coached to lose weight is no different. Frequently clients have a range of emotions they feel as they slowly shift from creating obesity to eliminating obesity; excitment and relief at first, then anger and resentment, then resolve and happiness. While it stings to be on the receiving end of the bitterness a client feels as he is looking at destructive behaviors, there is no better feeling than to witness someone coming out of it and starting to take their life back!

Talking daily with men and women who are losing hundreds of pounds, ON THEIR OWN, without surgery or pills or special foods, has been one of the most inspiring parts of my work. These people are heroes and heroines in the epic sense that they have conquered their worst fears and changed their life forever.
