Being a prestigious Royal temple in Thailand, “Wat Suthat Thepwararam” is one of the first grade temples, which was being constructed during the reigns of King Rama I, II and III. Its construction was begun by king “Rama I” in 1807 and further constructions and wooden carvings were done during the sovereignty of King Rama II. The construction was completed by King Rama III with several decorative modifications.

People can visit the monastery on Bamrung Muang Road at the heart of Bangkok especially to see its admirable murals and a large number of Buddha statues that belong to the reigns of King Rama II and III. The temple covers an area of 44,980 square meters that houses interesting sculptural and architectural highlights which reflect the philosophy of Buddhism. Its outstanding carvings are exemplified by the doors and windows
of the preaching hall that display complex and attractive figures and statuettes.

The Phra Sisakayamuni Buddha image in this monastery is 8 meters high and 6.25 meters in width and it is considered as the oldest and largest bronze Buddha image in the country. The giant red swing called “Sao Ching Cha” is right in front of the temple and it is the place where Brahmanic ceremonies were performed until the beginning of the 20th century. Another religious ceremony also used to take place at this place, during which people attempted to swing as high as possible to get a sack of gold tied around 25 meters above. But it was banned in 1930 due to many deaths in the attempt.

Apart from that, seven Chinese pagodas can be found at the lower terrace, which display 28 Buddha statues on each side to represent the 28 Buddhas born on the earth so far. More over the monastery possesses the largest ordination hall in the country of which the roof has been made in traditional Thai architectural style in four levels. Its boundary stones also display beautiful Chinese carvings.
