Getting good exposure for whatever you are rallying around is a great way to get the word out to everyone. The reasons, positive or negative, are really irrelevant. Using t-shirts to advertise something, or to make everyone aware of something great, or some injustice that has been done is nothing more than using a tried and true method of advertising that produces results.
If you don't like the ideal of using t-shirts to do your advertising at any level, you might want to take a closer look at this picture. T-shirt advertising has been around for decades and is continually used by major world wide corporations world wide. When you review the data, you will see that the return is very good for the cost. People will support what they believe in.
Numbers are good for a protest. A protest doesn't have to be a loud violent thing. It can be very quiet and unobtrusive, and still get a lot of attention. It is not too hard to imagine the scenario. A city with a relatively small downtown area could be inundated with people quite easily. If you had a group of people, maybe 100 to 200, and gave them all the same t-shirt. They could all converge on the downtown area and do business while wearing your protest.
What better way to be silently heard than with a memorable t-shirt with the right message on it for everyone to see. You will get noticed without the hassle of blocking the streets, filling up an office or building, or being destructive. Why not have small teams go for lunch, or coffee and cover more distance making strategic stops in shops to become more visible, just the stroll to these other places will get you heard and gain support.
All of the participants in your quiet protest could be going about their business just like anybody else, while being seen the whole time. It is just one idea of using the power of an image or a message that can be printed on a t-shirt. There are other methods to get attention and to let people in on a particular issue, but doing something that is quiet and dignified can only arouse curiosity as opposed to derision.
