Almost everyone has access to the Internet and that is a good thing. It makes the world a whole lot smaller and makes it easier to do business and take care of personal needs with a few minutes of work at the keyboard. There are also some things that can go really wrong if you have children and they have access to the Net. Kids today know a lot more about the Net and social media than most of their parents and use it to learn about the world, do homework, but also to contact people some of might be strangers that are contacting them by the Net. A lo tofu parents use the Net as a babysitter or let them play no it just to have a good time, but without proper mentoring the Net can be a terribly dangerous diversion.
Kids used to play baseball and football out in the parks or in their yards, but today they simply use their computers and sit on the couch all day waiting for some Chicken McNuggets to eat for dinner. They can be using the Net for learning purposes such as homework and simply Googling a site that contains information that they might want to know just for the fun of it. The Net can be used as a teaching tool, but way too many people use it as a babysitting device while they are on their own personal computer.
For one thing, computers and the users of the Net are turning into little more than couch potatoes who do not know how important it is to be able to interact with kids their own age unless it is through the use of the Web. Sure, the Net can be used to teach and educate, but playing games and using Facebook all day and into the night isn't exactly teaching the best lessons in life.
You can never deny the importance of the Net, but you also have to realize that as a parent, you need to monitor the amount of use your kids are taking on the Net and also look out for what they are searching. There are some dangerous sites out there. Almost all kids have a Facebook account, and that is fun and almost a necessary thing for kids, but it has to be monitored because not all adults use it the right way.
As a parent, learn to teach your kids how to use the Web for learning purposes and reward them by letting them use it for social interaction, but make sure you know what your kids are up to at all times. As kids grow older, it is imperative that they know how to work their home computers, but only for all of the right reasons.
