Travelling the world is one of the most pleasurable experiences in many people's lives. However, very often we hear stories from holidaymakers who got mugged on their trip, lost their passport or had their valuables stolen. Whether it is a trip around the world or a typical 'bucket and spade' package holiday, it is worth observing common safety rules to avoid any possible stressful situations.

1. First of all, when in your hotel, always put your passport and any valuables in the hotel safe either at the reception or in your room.

2. Never carry large amounts of cash in your wallet with you when out and about. It is also advisable to carry your holiday money in different forms e.g. travelers' cheques or credit cards and have them stored in many different places like pockets, safe or luggage etc.

3. When in the journey or walking in town, carry your cash in your money belt as it is not so easily accessible to the pickpockets.

4. Never leave any of your possessions or valuables unattended when on the beach.

5. Do not wear flash jewellery or expensive watches, so you are not an obvious target for muggers

6. It is worth photo copying your passport and credit cards in case they get lost or stolen.

7. Always carry the telephone numbers of the nearest British Embassy, your credit card and insurance company in case you need to contact them in an emergency or to report your loss.

8. When taking a taxi from the airport or in town, only use the officially marked ones.

9. Never accept lifts from third parties or do not lend any money to people you don't know.

10. Do not walk alone in the streets at night, especially if you don't know the town or holiday resort you are staying in.

11. Leave your hotel or any contact number with your relatives or friends before your trip, so you are always contactable if necessary.

12. Before you travel, always check the health and safety information about your destination on Foreign Department's website.

13. Take any recommended health precautions and vaccinations if needed.

14. It is always a good idea to check if the water in the country of your destination is potable or to stick with drinking bottled water.

15. If you are hiring a car abroad, always check the most important traffic rules. Never leave your possessions on the car seats and make sure the car is always locked when you leave it.
