One way or another, these men and women manage to remain active and busy, even after they’ve officially retired, because lying around and doing nothing simply does not appeal to them.

3. Nonconformity – Not surprisingly, most entrepreneurs have a tendency to march to the beat of their own drummer. They are typically independent, which is why they are restless when they have to work in a job where they have no control over how and when they do things. Getting things done is one of the most essential characteristics of an entrepreneur. The nonconformist in them, however, has their own way of getting things done.

4. Strong leadership – Among all the characteristics of an entrepreneur, this one is the hardest to define. Call it decisiveness. Call it interpersonal skills, Call it organizational skills. It’s all part of the mix that makes a strong leader. Even if you don’t have any employees at the very beginning, a fledgling business requires strong leadership to keep heading in the right direction. Successful entrepreneurs know that, ultimately, they are the only ones responsible for their own success or failure.

5. Street smarts - It might surprise some of you to know that quite a few of the world’s billionaires are college dropouts who chose to become entrepreneurs instead of getting their college degree. Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard to start Microsoft. Larry Ellison dropped out of the University of Illinois before co-founding database giant, Oracle. John Simplot, inventor of frozen French fries, never made it past high school. These extremely successful entrepreneurs all have all the characteristics of an entrepreneur previously mentioned plus a different kind of intelligence that enabled them to build their respective business empires. It’s an instinct for being able to leverage what you know or what you do better than anyone else into something that people will want. It takes a shrewd mind to take a great idea and make it come to life.
