Why subject yourself, your pets, family and the environment to harmful chemical treatments when practicing organic pest control in your garden can be just as effective? No doubt pesticides are effective in treating garden pest but on the other hand our health is far more important.
The only thing with organic pest control it is that it does not always work on a broad spectrum of insects. An organic garden pest control usually targets one specific problem. You will need to combine treatments plans in order to cover all you bases.
Below are some tips of how you can eradicate some nasty little garden critters.
Using beneficial insects for organic garden pest control
Insects do eat insects, so why not use this to our advantage? Ladybugs, lacewings, arachnoids, ichneumon wasps and hover flies all love to eat aphids, mites, leaf eating caterpillars and a variety of other garden eating pests. This is a perfect way of getting rid of the harmful insects that are destroying your garden.
So, how do you attract these beneficial insects to your garden? There are two ways:
1. Become an effective organic gardener by planting flowers in your garden that attract these insects to your garden. Make sure that you plant these flowers well in advance of your garden so that they have time to flower. It is the flowers that usually attract the insects. Here are some flowers for you to plant: yarrow, asters, goldenrod, black-eyed susans, tansy and Queen Anne’s lace.
2. Our second option is to buy these bugs. We can buy just about everything under the sun these days even insects. You can order them through various home and garden catalogues or on the internet.
Using cheap homemade remedies for organic garden pest control
Our kitchen cabinets contain a plethora of ingredients that can generate some great organic garden pest control solutions.
In a spray container mix:
• a few drops of liquid soap
• a tablespoon of canola oil
• about a quart of water
This solution is suitable for mealy bugs, mites, aphids and other soft bodied pests. Spray both the topside and underside of the leaves on your affected plants to control these pests, as the oil will asphyxiate them.
Cayenne pepper or other noxious hot sauces are effective deterrents against a variety of pests.
In a spray container mix:
• a quart of water with
• some liquid soap
• a few tablespoons of hot pepper sauce or powdered cayenne
Allow to sit overnight before mixing up and spraying on the effected plants.
For fungal diseases mix:
• a quart of water and
• two tablespoons of baking soda together
Use a sprayer to treat your affected plants as an organic garden pest control solution. You may have to apply this treatment every few days to eradicate the fungus or if it rains and washes the treatment away.
For mildew that looks like powder on your plants, mix:
• equal parts of water and milk together to spray on them.
It will take several applications every few days to get rid of the mildew and save the plant.
These are just a few of the organic garden pest control solutions and there are many more. Keep in mind that most of these solutions are for specific problems. It’s not ‘one size fits all’
