When it comes down to taking photos with your phone, it basically comes down to two different things; What can the phone’s camera do? What can you do with the phone’s camera?
1. What can the phone’s camera do?
Make sure to discover what the camera phone's tech is able to do, the limitations, and if the camera phone is capable of taking the picture that you are wanting. Luckily, getting the answer to this question is as simple as learning the phone's camera specs (as well as knowing their meaning of course). Take care to look after and have an understanding of these specs.
-The Megapixels- What are the amount of megapixels Find out the amount of megapixels available.
-The Zoom- Figure out what form of zoom being used (maybe optical or digital).
-The Lights- Is there any flash or are there some other forms of lighting that the phone can make?
-The Adjustables- Take note of what options (including EV, white balance, and a night mode) that the phone has.
Finding out about what these specifications are is vital for making acceptable pictures with your phone.
2. What can you do with the phone’s camera?
Before you can make acceptable pictures from your phone's camera, you must know how to mix a few normal photography techniques with some particular skills needed for taking photos on a camera phone. A successful mix of these two lead to some surprisingly high quality pictures when conditions are ideal, but don’t be too shocked if the photos still don’t look as good as you thought it should. It is just a phone's camera and thus is limited to what it can do.
-Increase the megapixels- For most of the camera phones, two to three megapixles (MP) are the most that is common. Use it! You might say it takes up more space on your memory, yet you have a higher probability of taking photos that are worth keeping and even getting printed out. It is true that more megapixles don’t necessarily mean better quality photos, however, if the phone's camera is not capable of shooting at bare minimum 1MP pics, you really shouldn’t consider using it for more than some quick action pics which remain in the phone's memory (due mostly to the fact that they don't look large enough made into a printed photo or shown on a computer).
-Movement is bad- When using a normal consumer camera, if you have a bit of movement it is best if not done but still not a huge deal for novice photographers. When a phone's camera is being used though, any movement is overly exaggerated and can make for some truly ugly looking photos with just the smallest shake. Try to be as still as you can for a better probability of a worthwhile picture.
-Be close to the subject of the picture- Camera phones, as a rule, are bad with multiple subjects all with the same frame. To take more decent quality photos, move close to your subject so all of the camera's focus will remain on it, in turn helping the picture to be focused.
-Don't use digital zoom- Really, just say no. Using digital zoom makes a photo appear pixilated, make a shot's resolution lower, and will most likely , in my opinion, ruin your picture every time. Optical zoom (when your camera phone comes with it) is ok to use if you need to zoom in on something, but better still is getting nearer to the subject.
-Lighting can make or break a good picture- In order to get good photos from the typical camera, a vital variable to keep in mind is the lighting. With a camera phone it will have an even more prominent effect. Too much light or not enough light ends up as a ruined picture. For the best possible pictures try to take the photos in locations that are well lighted. If not, then figure out the phone's adjustable lighting settings (below).
-Adjustables should be adjusted- In times when it is impossible to get good lighting setup, it is a good time to know how to use a phone's adjustable settings in order to compensate for this. The two ones that are will have the most helpful effect are white balance and EV, which will help you deal with low light and extremely bright situations. Be see if there is a "night mode" setting that can be used as well as taking care to turn on the flash.
