Have you been kicking around the idea of starting your own home based business? Well before you fly away into the dream world and start thinking about all the free time that you will have and the images of you having endless TV, let me just show you the truth of what it is like being an online business owner.
The greatest image of the new Internet Business owner is that thought of walking into your old boss’s office and telling him that you are giving your two weeks notice. You are no longer going to be work hard, long hours just to make him money.
So you may be wondering if this image could be true. Well, it does have possibilities. It very well could be true depending on how hard you want to work at making sure that your endeavor is successful. But before you get too far, I would like to cover what you could be giving up.
1) You will be saying goodbye to a safe and reliable income. There is no job out there that is 100% secure. And there are some good arguments being made that even small online businesses are generating more secure income versus the normal 9 to 5 jobs out there. The reason for this is because these small businesses are not at risk of downsizing. But be cautioned, even the some of the older online businesses can not be certain that sales will continue to come in every week. It really does not matter if you are a small business owner or an employee for a big time corporation. Everyone has their good sales weeks and their bad sales weeks. The question is will you be OK having a few weeks of great sales and a few weeks of week sales?
2) Be ready to commit to your business. When you leave your normal 9 to 5 job, you get to leave your work at your place of employment. But online business owners do not have that benefit. We all live and breathe our business 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I can not tell you how many times that I am lying in bed, and just thinking of ways that I can improve my profits. I find myself getting up in the middle of the night jotting down ideas that I can follow up the next morning. So if you are entertaining the idea of becoming an online business owner, keep that in mind.
3) Do not expect to make real profits until you have established yourself for about a year. There are a lot of ways to make money online, but do not think that you are going to be rich within a month. It takes a year for you to develop a business plan and strategy that actually works. My first year, I had to revise my business strategy 4 times before I found a way of business that actually started to generate real money for me. It was really all about finding a product that I believed in and learning how to market it the right way. Once I found the right strategy, things really started rolling and the money started coming in.
In closing, I would hope that I have not scared you off in thinking that starting your own business is not right for you. Because the truth is that anyone can do it. You just have to have the determination and drive to see your goals come true. You owe it to yourself and your family.
