In a recent survey, it was revealed that just under a third of UK homes are still without internet access. While a proportion of this figure is a result of areas of the UK that are too remote to connect to the internet, there's also a number of households who simply don't wish to go online. While freedom of choice is utmost, the benefits of internet access could easily be seen to outweigh any detrimental attributes as we discuss the importance of the internet to the whole family.
Looking at the four demographics within the family – children, teens, adults and older people – there are clear advantages of internet use at any age. With the majority of the sites online aimed at the adult demographic it's hardly surprising that the list of advantages for adults is practically endless. In recent years, the focus on saving money on financial products, cars, houses and everyday items like groceries means there's plenty of sites with the consumer' best interests at heart. From health and life insurance comparison to websites that offer a plethora of vouchers, consulting the internet is a great way for money conscious adults to save.
Although the older generation will not only have experienced the introduction of the internet let alone the forefathers of the humble computer, this does not mean that they too can't enjoy the benefits of the internet. With local libraries and community centres offering older people the opportunity to brush up on their IT skills, getting connected and getting online has never been easier. Whether staying in touch with a grandchild via email, doing grocery shopping online or simply reading the news, the internet holds an entire spectrum of advantages for older people wanting to use the internet; not to mention the family as a whole.
