Money making websites come in many different sizes and colors. Some make money through advertising, while others sell products or services. No matter where in this spectrum a site fits, there is one inevitable truth that fits them all. The traffic that the site gets is targeted.
If you have been spending your time at traffic exchanges, you may have been wasting your time. Or if you are targeting keywords that appear easier for your site to reach the first page on Google's search results, but they are only marginally related to your product, you may be wasting your time. And what's worse, you are probably wasting your visitor's time as well.
I say that you may be wasting your time with these kinds of activities because in some cases they may have their place. For example, think about what it is that people who are at a traffic exchange want. That's right, they are looking for more traffic. So if you are selling a product that helps them get more traffic for less effort than they are already putting into the exchange, you are probably in the right spot.
However, if you have a site all about yoga, you are definitely wasting your time at a traffic exchange. While some of the people surfing at the exchange may be interested in yoga, they aren't thinking about it right at that moment. And they certainly don't want to waste the time they have to surf for exchange credits looking at your yoga site.
Likewise, if you have a site all about yoga, you may be wasting time going after keywords related to meditation. While these two things seem somewhat related, and the visitors to your site may well be interested in both meditation and yoga, you are finding them at a time when they want information or products about meditation. If you don't, they are going to hit the back button so fast your website will spin.
So how can you avoid wasting your time and the time of your visitors? Simple, target only the most relevant keywords and keep your site on topic. If your site is about yoga, include articles about yoga. Offer yoga equipment or instructional DVDs from your site. Put up a video with some yoga instruction. And keep your marketing efforts targeted to your yoga keywords.
If you want to talk about meditation, and sell DVDs or books about how to meditate, create another website and start another marketing campaign. That way you can target them separately and offer them exactly what they want when the reach your site.
By keeping your topic specific, and marketing to only the truly relevant keywords, you will find that you spend less time marketing, you'll get better results, and your bounce rate will decrease. On top of all that, you'll have a successful money making website.
