Some leaders in network marketing will tell you in a New York minute that the number one skill to learn is the art of recruiting. Others will argue that you need to learn how to apply the proper mechanics of following up with prospects. It can be argued that the most important skill to develop in network marketing is developing your phone skills. Although, all of these skills and many more are important, they are all wrong. The number one skill that any networker must learn to survive in network marketing is developing mental toughness.
The chief reason why it is so important to develope this greatest of all skills is because if your mental attitude towards the business is not right, you will stand a good chance of failing in your attempt in network marketing. The magnitude of rejection that is a normal part of building a network marketing business can be overwhelming and cause some to quit before success is achieved, just as it has been for millions of ambitious people in times past. The vast majority of the time when people reject network marketing it is simply because they don't understand network marketing and their lack of understanding is most commonly expresses through ridicule. However, if you have a solid mental image of what you represent and you can stand the onslaught of persecution because of your involvement in this industry, you will be on your way to live the lifestyle that only a handful of people get to enjoy.
When I have the opportunity to talk to other networker marketers, it is interesting to note one common issue. Most networkers have the wrong attitude when it comes to building their network marketing empire and it is not all their fault. When you consider how the average networker was originally sponsored with the, "Sign here and everything will be easy" mindset, it is not surprising that the dropout rate is over 90 percent. Let's be truthful and acknowledge that network marketing is not an easy business and if you are telling people that it is to get them to sign on the dotted line, stop it. Your prospect deserves to know that this business is going to be difficult. You must in factgroom your prospect for all rejection scenarios that is going to come their way. Role play with your prospect and reverse role play until your prospect feels comfortable and confident with whatever level of rejection that their drunken uncle Bill throws their way. This does not promise that your just starting out distributor will become successful in network marketing, but at least it gives them a fighting opportunity in the first few months in the business.
Next, make sure that your just starting out distributor is receiving a expert dose of training from someone other than yourself. As a leader and coach to your just starting out distributors, instruct your people to invest in themselves by purchasing books, CDs and seminars on topics like motivation, vision building and other tools focused on mental toughness secrets from people who can provide world class information when you are not around. Ninety days of this beneficial information is enough to develop the right mindset to handle the rejection and ridicule associated with network marketing. If your team member does not get it after ninety day and they still want to hold your hand and cry you a pity party, I would recommend that you cut the cord and move on.
