Before going on any vacation is to do some research on your destination prior to leaving. Usually, if you're going somewhere, you are going to have time to do this because it is more than likely a vacation destination. You will do all the research prior to leaving and you're going there given that it appeals to what you want your recreation and vacation to be like. However, for traveling for some other reasons like business, it might be different.

You might head someplace that you simply never planned on going to or never even heard of. These are the rare opportunities that you may have to see something that wasn't even on your radar or in your plans. You get a chance to try something new and see something new that you never imagined you would. Take advantage of this opportunity by doing a little research before you go and have a plan in place prior to going.

Look for the great things that every town has that you might miss if you don't know where to look or to even look at all. Every place that you visit has something unique and special that you can not do anyplace else or is not as good anywhere else. These are the events and places that you need to seek out and try and discover for yourself. Many times on business trips there's a minimal amount of time and it's usually rush, rush, rush until you get back on the aircraft to head home.

Even with these restrictions, you have to spend some time in the town or city, you will most likely have to eat or sleep there. This is the perfect opportunity to get some of the area flavor, and if you're lucky, you'll have a little more down time in order to check things out. But you can't wait until you arrive and just hope to ask the right person for the town's secrets, you have to do some work upfront, before you go.

Almost every town and city has a website that lists the local events and highlights of the city, but don't just rely on these official websites. Dig a little deeper so that you might be able to find something a little more under the radar, whether it is a local hang out that serves the best local food or a museum of local artists or maybe a locally owned classic book store that you just don't see in the bigger towns anymore.
