Around twenty-five years ago it was not uncommon to hear a very high-pitched whistling sound and know that it was coming from someone’s hearing aid. This kind of feedback was caused by a number of factors that could include volume settings or problems with the device. Today’s hearing aids rarely ever have such issues, and can in fact overcome a startling array of issue.
Consider the life of someone involved in some sort of modern business environment. This person might have conferences with groups of people in large rooms where sound behaves in a way far different than in the traditional office space. This same person might have to speak one on one with someone in a cubicle, and they would also have to conduct many telephone conversations too. This same person may enjoy using a personal sound system during a commute home, and they might then have to hear their spouse over the sound of kitchen equipment, children, or the television set. Are there hearing aids capable of such complex service? Absolutely! Digital technologies have made their way into all of the best hearing devices and now the individual can wear a unit that is discreetly concealed inside their ear canal, or one that is mounted to the back of their ear, and still enjoy an impressive menu of high-tech options.
Gone are the days of dead batteries, feedback, poor function in different environments, and sound being drowned out by wind passing over the ear. Instead, the owner can select from multiple programs, noise reduction features, feedback elimination, wind noise reduction, low battery alerts, remote control, and even Bluetooth integration!
Remember, however, that once hearing has been lost it cannot usually be regained. There are no hearing aids that can return the hearing to its original levels, but they can provide the individual with something very close to it. This is regardless of the reason for the loss, and regardless of the style selected.
The modern wearer of a hearing aid is not going to be the stereotypical senior citizen or person in mid-life either. The leading cause of hearing loss in the modern world is not aging or birth defect but is damage done from exposure to loud noise on a regular basis. The use of heavy machinery, loud music, kitchen or lawn equipment or anything that generally hurts the ears or causes a headache can cause permanent hearing degradation or loss.
This is the reason that hearing aid designers have gone to great lengths to provide such a wide range of styles to meet all kinds of aesthetic and hearing requirements. For example, there are BTE or behind the ear types that are extremely comfortable and nearly undetectable, there are Open BTE which position the device behind the ear and run a small receiver into the ear canal, there are comfort styles that contour to the interior of the canal, and there are cosmetic types that fit inside the canal and which remain entirely out of sight.
