Since the 1950s people have been watching movies in their cars by heading to a local Drive-In theater. For most of this time, that has really been one of the only ways to kick back and enjoy such entertainment from a vehicle. The advent of portable DVD players made such a thing possible, but limited the viewer to the movies or programs that they owned. Today, however, there is a new way to watch movies in the car, and that is through a 4G wireless Internet connection.

Many people know about the different generations of mobile networks, with 3G being the one most people are aware of today. There is a fourth generation, however, and it uses an all-new approach to creating mobile communication and service. It implements something called WiMAX technology and this converts an entire area, usually a metropolitan area, into a giant network. While earlier technologies could transition from signal to signal without a lot of interruption or loss of quality, the 4G Internet services are so powerful that they can allow someone to stream video across the Internet from a mobile device or laptop computer.

Not only can the signals from the fourth generation networks deliver at speeds roughly four times that of third generation systems, but they also provide a much wider range of options too. Consider that many urban dwellers opt for a 4G service simply because it provides them with the means to enjoy an entirely wireless way of life. They get Internet service that is just as reliable and fast as the Broadband connections, and they also get to choose if they want to have a VoIP phone instead of standard phone line connection.

The VoIP is a “voice over Internet protocol” that uses the wireless signal to make and accept standard phone calls on a local or long-distance basis. This would mean that the account holder is given a standard “dial up” telephone number that they can give to friends, family and co-workers. When this number is dialed using a traditional telephone the connection is made across the Internet. This can save tremendous amounts of money on long-distance services, and can go with the account holder wherever they travel or even relocate.

Clearly, 4G services offer a wide array of benefits, but it must never be forgotten that they will also allow an unprecedented level of continuity in addition to everything else. Consider how often the hardwired equipment such as telephones and cable systems experience outages and problems. With a wireless system in place, a home or office would never have to deal with the frustrations and potential losses that occur when systems are unavailable or when services are down for prolonged periods of time.

The WiMAX technology is currently one that functions best in a closely populated metropolitan area. This is due to the numerous towers and routers that appear in such areas. This same technology is rapidly expanding into more rural areas too, and it is only a matter of time before the 4G networks are accessible to the vast majority of locations.
