In getting ready for the next drawing, lottery players use a variety of lottery software tools. Lottery software programs that analyze the history of winning numbers make up most of the tools in a lottery toolbox. These tools range from simple and straight forward to the unfathomable and unreasonably complex. In every serious lottery players toolbox, there is one tool they all have incommon. It is more basic and fundamental than all the rest. It is a simple chronological listing of the past winning numbers.

This is the classical way of representing a lotterys history. Usually, it will list the drawing number or drawing date followed by the winning numbers; one drawing per row.

It looks like this:

1 3 6 17 24 33 46
2 11 12 27 29 41 42
3 5 16 26 31 35 44
...

When a player is assembling his play list for the next drawing, this tool allows him to examine the past winning numbers searching for lottery number patterns. There are many lottery players that are quite good at this but frankly, I'm not very good at it. They have a remarkable ability to see patterns where the rest of us just see a list of numbers.

The Eyes Go First

I can already hear some of you saying, 'You've got to be kidding. This is no tool at all. This is a joke.' Hold your horses there Senior Cynic, there is much more. Much more!

Observing such a listing, one thing becomes rather obvious. It looks similar to an excel spreadsheet. Therefore, we can manipulate it using typical database tools to simplify our search for lottery number patterns and trends. Here are some examples of what is possible.

As players eyes go back and forth scanning a drawing, players complain that they lose track of their position and have to start over. There is also that headache that ensues about five minutes later. For example, let's say a player wants to compare the first column of numbers with the fifth column of numbers. Why? He's looking for any number pattern or trend that could give him an advantage.

By simply rearranging the columns, the player could easily reduce eye strain and fatigue. With the two columns of interest now adjacent to one another, the player would no longer be distracted by the numbers in between. Further, to minimize distractions he could also simply blank the remaining columns. This affords the player the ability to focus all of his attention on the columns of interest. Players love this feature.

Let's Have Order

A chronological listing present other problems. All of the drawings are in sequencial order. Why should we be forced to look at the drawings in order? Where is it written that we have to look at the past winning numbers in the same old way? Let's think outside the box.

We could sort the database on any column. For instance, sorting column 1 would place all drawings that contain the number 1 together for easy examination. Wow! Now, that's a substantial improvement. Now it would be much easier to look for any patterns relating to the number 1. But, wait; there's more. You could also sort column 1 in descending order, placing the largest numbers first.

We started out with a simple listing of the winning lottery numbers. Now, we can turn the lottery history inside out with some simple database manipulation techniques. This sheds some new light on the lottery's history. It provides the player with many new vantage points.
