The Five Steps on How to Read Guitar Music

       

When learning how to read guitar music, the person interested needs to keep in mind that it is different than the music for a piano, a drum, or other instruments. The music related to guitars is written in something called the tab. The first step in learning how to read guitar music is to identify basic tabs, written. Tabs have the similar staff and spaces that standard sheet music has. The only difference is that the six lines represent the strings on the guitar.

The second step is to look for fret numbers. The numbers are located in the middle of the lines and tell where in the fret that specific string should be played. If there is a zero, this means that the open string should be played. To play an open string, no string needs to be held down for that chord. The third step is to practice finger placement. Only with practice can a person be able to master fret locations and fast tab reading at the same time. It is better to practice with only the finger placement when learning a new piece of music instead of trying to make it sound good as well.

The fourth step is to listen to the song being played by someone else, whether it be the original artist or just someone who plays the guitar very well. This helps in the rhythm department. If the person does not listen to the song, then they will not know how fast to play the notes. After listening to the song, the person should practice playing along with the song. Part of learning how to play the guitar is memorization. Once the person has read the tabs that show the finger positions on the frets, they need to practice combining those positions with the rhythm of the music.

The fifth and final step is to start strumming the strings. Up until now, there has been practice just combining the steps, but this step concludes it all. Once a person masters finger placement along with the rhythm of the music, they should be able to get a generally good sound out of the guitar with each strum. Practice and patience are key when it comes to playing the guitar.
