On the 9th of January 2008, Sam Allardyce and Newcastle parted company rather abruptly in the wake of a dismal run of form
by the Newcastle team which saw the Magpies take only 6 wins from 24 games.
Although Allardyce's 33% success rate resulted in him being booted out of Newcastle United to make space for prodigal son Kevin Keegan,
his stats are by no means the worst ever seen in English football. To put Allardyce's performance in perspective we'll count down the five worst English football managers in history.
5. Chris Hutchings
Chris Hutchings is notable for making Sam Allardyce look like a rare talent. During his tenure at Sheffield Wednesday Hutchings managed only one win in 12 games in premier league football. He later moved to Wigan, started off well, and then effortlessly guided the club into the relegation zone within the first 12 games of the 2007/2008 Premiership.
4. Alvin Martin
Alvin Martin lays claim to one of the shortest football management careers in history. Following a successful playing career he was appointed manager of Southend United. During his reign of ineptitude which featured 83 games over two seasons, Martin's charges amassed a total of 22 wins for a 26% win rate. Following his unsuccessful stint in management Martin moved on to a more successful career as a television football pundit.
3. Martin Wilkinson
During his year long appointment at Carlisle, Martin Wilkinson's players recorded 11 wins from 52 games, giving him a success rate of 21%. Refusing to give up on his management aspirations following his dismissal from Carlisle, Martin Wilkinson moved on to Peterborough where he lasted 26 games before being uncharitably shown the door with a much improved 34% win record.
2. Howard Wilkinson
Howard Wilkinson provides further evidence that those bearing the surname Wilkinson are perhaps better suited to rugby than football. Part of a rich tradition of absolutely useless Sunderland football managers, Wilkinson led his team to an impressive total of 4 victories from 27 games, losing 15 games along the way. By the time he was sacked, Wilkinson's win ratio stood at 14%.
1. Terry Fenwick
Head and shoulders below all the competition for worst English football manager of all time is Terry Fenwick. During his brief stay at Northampton Football club, Fenwick's charges played 7 games, winning none of them. To make matters worse, only two of the results were accounted for by draws. He has not been seen in the vicinity of a football field since.
