TXDoT Receives Award from the National Transportation Public Affairs Workshop for Innovative Public Relations Efforts:
The Texas Department of Transportation was recently honored by winning the NTPAW 2010 Award! The national award recognizes the Texas Department of Transportation for the above and beyond public relations efforts. Winners of this award demonstrate the very best examples of innovation, planning, production, and execution in the area of public affairs! A warm congratulations to my client TXDoT!
What was TXDoT’s Innovative and Creative Public Relations Approach? Graphic Recording!
My client at TXDoT submitted their entry for the award; and the entry was the graphic recording charts that I created both in advance in my studio and in real time during their Annual Transportation Forum. The graphic recording charts visually drew out the big themes, points of celebration, points of growth, potential challenges to overcome, and future strategic vision for public transportation not only in the state of Texas, but on a federal level as well.
Behind the Story: How did TXDoT Utilize the Graphic Recording Charts both During and After the Annual Transportation Forum?
There were several creative ways. First, I created a large mural of TXDoT’s ideal future vision for transportation for Texas in my studio. This visioning piece was created from a bullet-point list TXDoT provided of their key vision. I took this list and from it, created the mural below. The completed chart is 4 feet tall by 12 feet long.
When the participants arrived onsite to the Annual Transportation Forum, they were immediately greeted by this Future Vision State mural in a main congregation area. The informal conversation immediately turned from simple pleasantries to the future vision of transportation!
Next , the forum participants checked into the event registration desk where they received their forum entry pass on a lanyard…and on the flip side of the entry pass was a smaller scale printout of Future Vision State. So before the Forum even began, participants were already discussing the Future Vision and had their own highly visual copy of this vision on the entry pass. It was highly effective.
Next we moved on to the Forum itself, where I was graphic recording in real time at the front of the room throughout the entire session; capturing key themes and messages. After the Forum, I digitized all of the graphic recording charts. The digital graphic recording charts were uploaded to the Forum website where participants could download softcopies of the charts for their own future reference. All in all, a highly successful event!
Again, warmest regards to TXDoT – it was an absolute pleasure to work with such a high performing team!!!
