New technology is great, however sometimes it's too new, too ahead of its time and no one understands it enough to take advantage of it. That is why you see new things introduced and pushed by the manufacturers and it's soon in the bargain bins looking for homes at a greatly reduced price. Sometimes there are too many choices and individuals simply don’t know which one to choose and so they do not choose any.
This kind of took place with HD DVD and Blu-ray discs. They were both hi-def formats for watching movies at home, and they were released at about the same time. The only issue was you had to buy a new player to use either format and people were not sure what type to pick. They didn’t want to be stuck with another useless piece of equipment like they were when they purchased all of those Betamax tapes back in the early 80's.
This apprehension kept a lot of men and women from picking one or the other and eventually, Sony built the Blu-ray player into all of their Playstation 3 consoles, there was no doubt that they would support the format. It made HD DVD irrelevant and it left the market and people have a few cool HD DVD’s to play on their machines; however new material was not being released. It happens a lot with new technology; people need a reason to believe that this is what is going to be around for a while and to buy into the format.
This is taking place with 3D television as we speak. Some men and women are looking at it and wondering if it's a fad or if it will be in the mainstream sooner than later, but some individuals still question whether it's worth it or not. The manufacturers are pushing the technology and there are even a couple of dedicated 3D channels offered by many cable providers, but individuals question whether it's going to go the way of the HD DVD or if it is going to take off like HD television did.
Remember, HDTV was deemed as a fad and too costly and not necessary, but now if you don’t have an HDTV then you're in the minority. Men and women that have upgraded to HDTV can’t even remember what television looked like before it was in high definition and can’t imagine ever returning to the old way of watching tv.
