With fast links between the countries by air and sea, and a flat landscape making internal travel easy, it can be plain sailing doing business with Amsterdam using a reliable international courier.

As one of our closest European neighbours, both geographically and culturally, there are many reasons why British businesses look towards the Netherlands, and specifically its capital, Amsterdam, when attempting to build their business overseas.

The Netherlands and its people are naturally cosmopolitan and welcoming, and this has helped make the country’s capital one of the best European cities in which to do business. In response to growing demand, the city’s business district is growing rapidly, while separate areas are also becoming established as legal and financial centres.

Dutch conglomerates which have expanded out of their homeland include several household names, such as Royal Bank of Scotland, Philips, ING Group and TomTom. Seven of the world’s 500 biggest companies are based here. Such business giants form the cornerstone of the Netherlands’ economy, but thanks to improved trans-continental air, road and rail connections, tourism is becoming increasingly important.

The city hosts about 4.6million international visitors each year, and at 42 per cent, it boasts an unusually high proportion of beds in four and five-star hotels.

Amsterdam is well served by all forms of transport, and a large amount of big international consignments reach the city via Rotterdam, the biggest port on the north European coast, which is well linked by road and rail.

The city’s famous canals, now more often used by tourists than to transport goods, are world-renowned, and the network became a UNESCO world heritage site in 2010.

There is a large number of specialist shops in Amsterdam, which stock the leading-edge international designer brands, and are becoming an increasingly important attraction for the city’s millions of visitors.

With a population of nearly 750,000, Amsterdam is small in comparison with many other European capitals, but it has one of the most diverse communities of any city in the world – it is reputed that 176 different nationalities are represented in the city’s population.

There is no need for any individual who moves to Amsterdam to feel distant from their family and friends as, thanks to the major international couriers, parcels and mail can be sent quickly and with the minimum of hassle.
