Dapeng, one of the new phone companies from China, has started marketing their catalog of phones outside China. One of their newest mobiles one can obtain is the T998, frequently cited by Dapeng as a media phone. The logic behind this statement from Dapeng is that they have claimed it has quite superb speakers, has a solid ready to go MP3 and mp4 player, has an anlog TV and FM receiver, and has the ability to play back your digital video files and pictures in widescreen 16:9.

This are my thoughts after having played with the mobile phone

The Good

Fairly Solid Speakers: As Dapeng advertised, the speakers placed in the phone are clear and loud. I have taken this mobile phone outside very near to a stop on a metro line with a very big herd present, and the mobile phone's speaker performed commendably.

Interesting Control Using The Accelerometer: Instead of simply browsing the UI with a touchscreen or keys, you are allowed to give a quick waggle to manipulate certain functions (also known as Shake Control). I consider it an an interesting and quick manner to travel around the mobile phone's menus and to manipulate many functions.

Widescreen Movie Viewing: The accelerometer also allows you to switch your films from 4:3 perspective to 16:9 simply by revolving the phone to the side.

The Ok

No Contract Unlocked And GSM Quadband: Possessing quadband support and being carrier unlocked, this phone is able for worldwide use without having to be tied to any contracts.

Bluetooth Enabled: I had absolutely no issues when I paired the phone with a Bluetooth headset, but the transmitting range on the T998 model I tested was a nominal 1 ft, little use if you desire to match with other phones.

The Bad

Music Intro On Power On: The excellent speakers are nice, but when you start the phone, the speakers go FULL blow with the irritation start up music that is impossible to mute.

Lack Of Internet Options: You can access the internet utilizing WAP, however, I have become accustomed to at least possessing EDGE speed.. Also lacking wifi also riles.

A Very Low End Camera: The camera is very small resolution, you won't think a lot of your pics even by the low standards of average camera phones.

No Java Apps: I believe this phone could have been a better deal if I was able to add some java apps to change things around a bit.

Bothersome File Format For the Movie Player: The movie player can only play 3GP files. If utilizing the video camera, it records in AVI format, but downloaded AVI files refuse to play.

Final thoughts

Like Dapeng has advertised, this phone is at least an ok media player. Music playing beats video playing hands down, but if you have the time to convert movie files to 3GP, then the movie player is solid enough. This phone has all the basic functions you need, with enough extras to make it interesting.
