When you are leaving home and heading off to university or college, the chances are you will find yourself looking for a house or flat share. Student accommodation these days are no longer shabby places that no one else wants to rent, they are perfectly reasonable homes and are offered on a range of budgets.

When you are looking for student accommodation to rent there are a few things you should look out for. The first thing is the council tax. The last thing you want is a shock when you discover your council tax is considerably higher than you had assumed. Make sure you know exactly what band you are in as council tax can be a considerable amount depending on where you are living. The same goes for all the bills. Always ensure you know exactly how much (or as near to as possible) your bills are going to be. Find out about gas, electricity, water rates and any other bills or taxes that you may need to pay. Sometimes these are included in the rent and sometimes they are paid in addition - find out what applies to your particular tenancy agreement.

The deposit it another area that needs to be clarified. If you are moving in with other students, find out if the deposit is per person or per household and what the conditions are for getting it back at the end of the tenancy. Also make sure you know of any rules or regulations that need to be followed such as whether smoking is allowed in the property. You don’t want to find yourself signing up to a tenancy and then realising you are unable to “stick to the rules”.

Student Accommodation and flat sharing is often a very enjoyable experience for students. Whether moving in with friends or total strangers, there is often a good social aspect to the experience and plenty of fun to be had. As long as you are aware of all financial responsibilities there are unlikely to be any problems along the way.
