Do you want to stop smoking - and make it stick? It's a hard habit to break, especially if you've tried before; if you've failed once, no matter how good your intentions, your mind is pre-set to fail again

If you've tried something difficult and failed, your subconscious will automatically think 'I can't do this' and you will be more likely to fail again.

Imagine if you went on stage to do a comedy gig, your first one… for which you’d prepared for months. You bomb completely, and get booed off stage. Would you want to risk failure again?

If you’ve tried to quit once, and you didn’t, it’s a similar thing. You’ll assume that quitting just isn’t for you, as you don’t succeed when you try it.

A smoker is, in some ways, always a smoker. The attitude and mind-set is predisposed towards a cigarette as a tension-reliever, a morning-waker, a break-time habit. It has probably been a convenient way to split the day into manageable chunks, ease the boredom and give a much needed nicotine burst at times of stress.

When someone quits smoking, a part of them always ways to carry on - as they see a cigarette as a guaranteed way to make themselves better BUT! there is a better way...

There is a secret to quitting any bad habit, and it's called a BREAK STATE.

That means that you need to recognise that you feel better indulging in a bad habit NOT because of the habit itself, but because the change in your activity and surroundings associated with the habit is allowing you to feel better.

That’s why you THINK you need those cigarettes.

Of course, nicotine is addictive, so there is a very real physical need BUT! it's only a part of the reason for your behaviour, and there is a better way...

You can teach yourself to let go of the need. It doesn’t have to go away; it's just that it won't matter anymore. You won't stop being YOU, you'll just become someone who doesn't need to listen to THAT part of yourself anymore.

Now the good news… YOU ALREADY DO THIS ALL OF THE TIME! Imagine if you acted on every thought in your head? To shout? To hit? To do something dangerous and stupid?

You obviously don't act on every single impulse - you distracted yourself, ran through the risks and you chose to ignore the urge. Everyone does this every day: you wouldn’t jump across an electrified rail track, or run through deadly freeway traffic so now, recognising this, you can be the person who doesn't have a cigarette.

If you find a new way to BREAK your STATE you’ll discover how to fulfil that missing part of you.

If you take the amount of time that it takes to smoke a cigarette (about 4 minutes) and DO SOMETHING ELSE you will see that it is the distraction rather than the action that makes you feel good.

Physical activity (cleaning, exercising, creating) works better than mental activity for some of my clients as these distractions take them physically away from the source of their frustration, but whatever works for you!

If completing a crossword, listening to your favourite song or simply staring at the sky for 4 minutes is enough to calm you and centre your mind, then these will be the perfect ways for you to break your habit!

In the beginning it will be difficult, but in a short space of time it will become automatic.

The secret to quitting cigarettes?

Identify what your BREAK STATE is, and find other ways to achieve it.

Be okay with wanting a cigarette.

Be okay with not having a cigarette.

Let go of that part of you that wants to always act on a desire.

Remember, quitting smoking forever means being something else forever… become a wealthier, healthier, smoke-free version of yourself.

And this change will be the best thing you ever did!
