Mary MacKillop has her own Center in Queensland committed to honoring her time on earth and her contributions to the children of the region. It is the keeping of a shrine to her memory and more over it is a place to celebrate her memory with pictures, artifacts, and serves as a place of worship as well. Known as the Annerley Center, this location was created in her memory in 1994 just prior to her beatification by Pope John Paul II.
Since that time there have been several visitors to the Annerley Center and since her canonization last year there has been a rise in the amount of visitors to the center. Mary has been officially adopted as a patron saint and has helped elevate awareness of the Josephites throughout the Queensland region.
The Josephites, including Mary, have worked hard for those who are less fortunate throughout the Queensland and many feel that this patron saint is a symbol not just of things of a religious nature however of the caring, giving, loving spirit of the Australian culture. Josephites dedicate themselves to taking care of the sick, impoverished, imprisoned, and disadvantaged through their acts of helpfulness and spirituality that helps to rekindle the souls of several throughout the region.
Mary is Brisbane’s very first saint and as a result there are many ways in that she is commemorated throughout the city. A number of shrines have been dedicated to her throughout the churches of the region. The Annerley Center along with St. Stephens Cathedral have both done an excellent job of paying tribute to Saint Mary.
If you are planning to visit Brisbane then you'll want to take time to pay a visit to at least one of the shrines dedicated to this remarkable woman. Her spirit will touch you and make you recognize that one person can make a difference. She is as much of an inspiration to this region in death as she was in life. It's a wonderful feeling to know that acts of human kindness aren't simply appreciated during your lifetime but also even after you leave the earth. St. Mary of Brisbane has not only contributed much to the world but in her canonization has also helped increase awareness to the Sisters of St. Joseph and all the incredible work that they continue doing with their missions even in the existing day.
