Insomnia affects people differently. Some get irritated and short tempered, others go quiet and say little.

Others get just plain silly as it gets later. The longer they are not able to sleep, or forced to stay awake for whatever reason, the more slap-happy they become.

Having ongoing trouble falling asleep, can affect people in many different ways. Those people who are having the sleep deprivation giddies are probably in a state of euphoria similar to the one related to using narcotics or alcohol.

Many people do feel as if they are drunk when they have been without sleep a long time.

Think about the last time that you could not get to bed when you wanted to- perhaps you were at a party or you had just switched to a night shift. You might have felt off balance, uncoordinated and generally clumsy.

You may have found yourself occasionally slurring your words or giggling at random. You may have even found yourself overcome with giggling at some point.

You look, feel and act drunk. Being in this particular condition means that if police stopped you the first thought would be that you were intoxicated.

Taking an alcohol test will clearly say you are not drunk, but the effects on your driving are pretty much the same.

Your body needs rest to recharge itself, which means that when it does not get the right amount of sleep, it is running on fumes. The brain does not process information as quickly or as accurately as it usually does.

In fact, if you were to take a standardized test after a full night of sleep and then repeat the same test after a night of sleeplessness, you would score far lower on the sleep deprived test.

(On average your score would drop, there are always exceptions that prove the rule). You would also have the same results for memory tests, balance tests and coordination exercises.

Any activity you try to do is performed less well if you are sleep deprived.

Others may smile at a person who can't t stop giggling because of insomnia, but for the affected one it is a problem.

If you stay awake long past your bed time you may find it unusually difficult to fall asleep. Once your body feels like it has had to get to its second wind, you may find that it will not let go and go to sleep at all.

Once you feel yourself getting to the stage of the giddies, it is time to figure out what you can do to either, get some sleep or to wake yourself back up.

If you are stuck at work, then take a fifteen minute break to walk in the fresh air, maybe drink a cup of coffee or whatever it takes to snap yourself back to alertness.

Whatever you do, do not drive when you are feeling this way or you are putting yourself and others at risk. If you can have someone come and get you or a coworker drive you home it is all the better.

The sleep deprivation giddies are no laughing matter, especially when you are behind the wheel.
