What sparked off as an idea by the Singaporean Tourist Board has now emerged as a much sort after event on the calendars of fashionistas and style gurus the world over. The Singapore Fashion Festival first launched in 2001, with the intention of making Singapore, South East Asia’s capital of fashion, has now exceeded those expectations.
The Singapore Fashion festival prides itself on showcasing the latest fashion collections, international and local talent and other fashion related fringes. Usually taking place in March and April, it is an event not to be missed.
Although the idea for the fashion festival was initially shelved by its creators, in the year 2000 when the tourist figures began picking up, the organisers felt the time was right to launch the festival. The organisers also discovered from the tourist figures that most tourists spent a lot on purchasing fashion accessories, perfumes etc. The Singapore Tourist Board then realisd the festival would be another means of further attracting this segment of tourists.
This consumer driven event is more focused on the attracting of high spenders who are eager to keep up with the latest trends. This segment of tourists is a part from the ones that already stop in for the Great Singapore Sale which also takes place every year. All in all, the annual fashion festivals hosted by Singapore such as these have only contributed to the regional image, that Singapore is the place to purchase the latest in apparel and accessories.
To date the Singapore Fashion Festival attracts local and foreign names to its shows. Names like Christian Dior or Kenzo are quite common. The festival’s previous years have witnessed the car park at Zouk’s being turned into a cat walk that showcased brands like Armani, OZOC, and even local fashion labels such as Island Shop are featured side by side.
Since 2003 the Singapore Fashion Festival has seen a rise in the number of international participants. However, with much emphasis on showcasing international designers the fashion festival has not forgotten its Asian talent as well. A good example of this, is when Indian designers of haute couture in 2002 took part in the festival along with the country’s local brands such as Celadon, Allure and By Ice.
For the compulsive shopper who wants more looking around and enjoys the comforts of an apartment in Singapore, they would be best suited to checking into a Singapore apartment hotel. Those who check in at the Citadines Singapore Mount Sophia, will be pleased with its service as well as its proximity to the quaint shopping corners of Orchard Road.
