How can you make this your cheapest but best most successful carp fishing year ever?! Imagine being able to make your own baits in seconds using only a couple of ingredients and going out fishing fully expecting to hook big wary fish! It can only cost a couple of pounds to do this too so read on and get ahead of the game – for life!
Yes you really can make surprisingly successful carp fishing baits (and catfish baits) for only a couple of quid. I could tell you how to make a bait using 2 ingredients and a particular flavour that will catch big fish all over the place and has done for years that anglers in the know would never admit to using because it is so simple but has proven so very effective.
I could mention here that you can make baits without any focus on expensive proteins whatsoever because carp are highly sensitive to many stimulatory substances that are completely different to amino acids. When you are in the know you will be able to exploit substances you never previously had associated with fish feeding at all - that cost such little money you will have to totally re-think your mental paradigm of what a carp bait may or may not actually need to be!
The biggest advantage in carp fishing is being different to the normal – it is easy to do this by thinking outside of the box. In fact if you want to think differently about your fishing and really do things in unique ways to circumnavigate defensive fish responses and instincts, and truly exploit their senses in your own unique favour, then it is a very good idea to completely avoid reading all the flashy magazines and fishing papers! This stripping down of second-hand inputs will help you focus and think more like a fish (vital) and actually clarify just how much about your fishing, buying habits and fishing challenges you are thinking and doing due to mindless autopilot mode conditioning and irrational out-dated and totally unnecessary habits often born out of the fear of missing out on new fashionable wonder baits, tackle or methods which lost their true edge the moment the masses exploited them!
Think about it – what is really going on when a carp finds a single rubber sweetcorn hook bait chucked out into the middle of a lake in the dark of night? Find out how neutral baits that carry intrinsic flavours of their constituents by no additional flavour factors can easily out-fish the majority of popular flavoured baits on much pressured big fish waters where fish are constantly looking for much safer washed-out baits.
The use of natural ingredients, natural extracts, natural sweeteners etc is nothing new, however the increasing use of natural flavours is a sign of the times demonstrating how carp can definitely respond negatively to prominent synthetic flavour components. I have been testing a range of natural flavours for a while and they have proved amazing.
I do advocate giving carp a reward for eating your baits but this certainly does not have to be protein at all and could be virtually anything that carp instinctively will associate with an improved sense of well-being or energy, or simply with an irresistible taste, smell or experience when sampling baits. Did you know you can make the cheapest baits without ever using the old traditional semolina and soya flour – discover how and imagine the savings you can make! You do not even have to roll baits into balls or regular shapes and in my opinion this is a complete waste of time and can most certainly make it far easier for carp to actually avoid your hook baits!
Have you ever noticed how the guys who seem to catch the majority of the big fish either spend most of their lives fishing or most of their time really seriously thinking in advance and planning their fishing down to every detail? Looking at the bigger picture of carp fishing reality the real truth is that such anglers would still catch more fish than average anglers even if you gave them bad bait!
I mean what do you expect if you give an angler 3 or 4 days or nights a week for 4 months or more for instance, to bait up with anything from 150 to 250 kilograms of free baits on a big fish water. This situation is going on all the time with so many bait and tackle-sponsored anglers. These are the majority of the high profile anglers who are in the magazines and fishing papers every week. Ordinary week end anglers actually are given the impression that they can achieve the same results if they use this bait or that bait but that is obviously extremely misleading.
If you did anything at the top level for years then you can out-compete average players most of the time because you are so well tuned in and refined in your thinking and entire approach. Unfortunately the average weekend carp angler is not at this level and never will be and should never expect miracles from commercial baits by thinking they can go out and do on a weekend what has taken 3 or 4 months of continuous heavy pre-baiting by a full-time angler like Terry Hearn!
It stands to reason that if everyone on a water goes onto one bait that bait will usually dominate catches because that is the one being used by most anglers and the one most fish are looking for. But in baiting situations things usually work out that the guys who use a new bait are the ones who achieve the biggest benefit in terms of catches because fish soon wise up to being hooked on baits and this makes things much harder for copycat anglers trying to catch the same fish afterwards on the exactly the same readymade baits!
Luckily in making your own homemade baits you can turn the tables on bait-sponsored anglers and top the popular readymade baits that are being chucked into lakes by the tonne load. This means that even as an average angler you can leverage your baits to catch you more fish and even catch as many as so-called celebrities. Most so-called high profile anglers usually have some kind of significant competitive edge up their sleeve and you can have too. It is a fact that many of these guys field test baits from commercial companies that are perhaps not quite the same bait versions that some companies eventually release to the market place because to do that would be unprofitable.
You too can make and field-test your very own super-potent baits made to especially potent recipes that 99 percent of bait companies would never produce because the cost of ingredients would be too high to make a profit! The fact is that most anglers use too little or too much baits because they simply do not understand how those baits really act on fish in a competitive fishing environment. But with enough knowledge everyone can afford to make their own homemade hook baits pretty much the most potent baits on a lake if they choose to do so and that is a fact!
You really can sit back and fish with supreme confidence knowing that the popular commercial baits you are fishing against will most probably be inferior in unique benefits, effects and characteristics compared to your totally unique homemade baits.
If nothing else your unique baits will have the massive advantage of being truly different and will succeed with big wary fish if only because you alone are the only angler using them! I have found that very often a totally new bait can catch out the biggest fish first on a lake, especially if fished in a very popular swim on a lake where the bulk of the free baits go in! If you are going to fish a new commercial bait you are in a race against time against those anglers also using that bait because as soon as your target fish get hooked on it this can seriously mess up your chances of success but by using your own baits there is no race against time! (The very first homemade boilie I ever made hooked a fish literally on the drop – I saw this as a good sign!)
Now this may sound obvious, but making your own baits means you can produce baits that work outstandingly without having to resort to the incredibly ridiculous process (and extra unnecessary expense) of coating ready baits in paste, or cutting up readymade baits to make then irregular shapes! These are 2 shining examples of utterly brainwashed fishing methods that are used barely without a thought by the masses now showing just how ignorant anglers really are of possibilities outside of mainstream commercial bait promotion consciousness! Sure readymade baits catch fish, but how often do they produce promised results for Mr Average after these baits have been hammered by the talented anglers or by those with far more time available on a water or some other competitive advantage?! I am just trying to demonstrate that you can easily do better than be lazy and keep on expecting miracles with the new wonder bait!
For instance, a bait company is currently pushing their mass-produced Chocolate Malt bait in the carp fishing media. Well I can assure you that the best time to get on any readymade bait is when it is not popular and not being used by the masses! In fact I was using the original version of this flavour about 20 years ago with great success and as soon as I knew others were onto it I moved onto new flavours or altered the nature of its characteristics to differentiate it enough so fish would not associate with it negatively due to being hooked on it previously!
I was the only guy using this flavour in the way I was using it on my lake because I was field-testing bait substances for the designer of this flavour (Rod Hutchinson) at the time, (so yes I do know a bit about how the commercial bait game really works!) There was an article written by a big noise commercial bait maker stating that flavours do not work (try telling Rod Hutchinson that to his face and see what kind of scientific (and real fishing proven) response you get!)
This personage even went so far as to state that some of the most well proven flavours do not work – while picturing flavours such as Chocolate Malt. I doubt that many people would find alcohol so attractive if it were not for all the other substances working alongside it in a wine or beer. Beer contains lupulin from hops which you may like to know not only has similar effects in the body as cannabis from hemp plants of course, but that hemp and hops belong to the very same plant family – Cannabaceae (look it up!) Down here in deepest darkest Kent in the sticks, I am surrounded by in effect what were drug-drying facilities and I can count around 14 oast or hop-flower drying houses within visual range of where I am sitting writing right now!
In truth in regards to flavours, real fishing results speak differently in my experience and all my cheap or extremely expensive homemade baits with Chocolate Malt produced loads of fish - but I was not using them against thousands of anglers using the exact same bait for months on end however! I made certain my baits had maximum competitive advantages and effects by making sure I was the only angler using them in the way I did on the waters I fished! Like I say; being different really is a massive competitive advantage!
A friend of mine has out-fished some of the leading match men in the country and had strings of match wins due to the baits he was using. It go to the stage where other match anglers would not fish matches he was in because his results were so good and he kept on winning. For this reason my friend was banned from using his homemade ground baits and hook baits and had to adjust and disguise what his baits looked like, smelled like and even change the entire form they took just so he was allowed to fish matches – yet he kept on winning good money. He runs a bait company orientated towards match and carp anglers especially. You might wonder what his match-winning baits had in them – again if you know about baits you will eventually come across a similar combination with enough practice in making bioactive baits.
But now back to the flavours not working issue! Doing tank tests using neat flavour substances on juvenile fish is like drawing scientific absolutes from a pH-controlled, temperature-controlled carp bait test in a tank full of filtered, demineralised water with no contaminants and no relationship with real fishing conditions that actually vary from one spot in a swim to another in every single real fishing situation!
Being able to select the very most potent commercially-available bait ingredients, extracts, flavours, essential oils, and other substances to top popular commercial baits like boilies, pellets, ground baits etc is an extremely big edge against full-time anglers, bait-sponsored anglers and the average readymade bait-buying average weekend carp angler - fact!
Remember the art is being different and not copying the latest fashions; these inevitably lead to a blunting of competitive edges when the copycat masses jump on the bandwagons. I would suggest that if you want to do well I carp fishing then take a really good look at what everyone else is doing on your lake – and make absolutely sure you do everything you can to solve your own problems and challenges differently because copying others really can lead to having even more disadvantages than you really need!
How do you make baits hard in the middle but soft on the out side? How do you make baits that the bigger fish will find harder to avoid getting hooked on? How can you make a tiny feeding area in a way that actually makes carp prefer to feed on you your hook bait first instead of your free bait? Such secrets all come from the experiences of making your own economical homemade baits and they will continue to keep you ahead of the average readymade-bait buying angler permanently for life!
