While this may be somewhat unusual, it has the possibility of affecting other people who use a continuous positive airway pressure machine. One of these inventions is used to help treat individuals who suffer with sleep apnea. Generally speaking, these machines are well-known to be safe and effective. However, to make sure they “are” safe and effective, you must always use distilled water to run them. There are no exceptions. This is one major reason to have water distillers in the home at all times.

This is a case that clearly demonstrates that not only do we need to be very careful about the water we “drink,” but the water we use in medical devices that we rely on to keep us healthy. In fact, if we aren’t careful, there is a high risk of inflammatory disease in your lungs. Only water from a water distiller is recommended in medical devices like this one.

The whole problem didn’t start until Nancy A. (name has been changed to protect the victim’s identity) went on vacation to her summer cottage. Nancy has suffered from sleep apnea for many years and used a continuous positive airway pressure machine just about every night. It uses humidified air to keep airways open while she is asleep.

Part of the procedure involved with this machine is cleaning it properly and filling it with it with only distilled water. Nancy faithfully did just that, but when she took off for her vacation, although she remembered to take her machine, she forgot to bring a supply of distilled water. Thinking it wouldn’t make much difference, she opted to use tap water at her cottage. The water came from a well just up the road from their cottage.

One night was all it took for a problem to surface. Nancy woke up the next morning with a severe sore throat. She knew immediately her symptoms were due to using tap water in her machine. Despite seeking immediate medical care, she was very ill for several weeks and had lung crackles and a significantly reduced level of blood oxygen.

She did take antibiotics, but the symptoms persisted until she has steroids added to her regime. Sometimes the cure is almost worse than the cause, but in this case, it was the only thing that ultimately worked.
Unfortunately, even three years later, she still has a persistent chronic cough. However, to this day, Nancy always takes her water distiller with her or a fresh supply of distilled water when she travels.

Nancy had the well water tested, but it showed no bacteria. However, they did find high levels of a toxic bacterial compound – endotoxin – that was likely linked to repairs made to the pipes before she arrived at the cottage. How frightening is that to find out not only had she inhaled this contaminated water into her lungs, but had been drinking it as well? The only way to get truly fresh water is from a water distillation system.
