Everybody grows old. The children of past generations now have their own children and grandchildren. For most old people, what may come next is a normal decline in their mental ability, or they could develop dementia. How does one prevent that and make sure that their brains are as sharp as they were when they were in the mid 30's?

If you were to ask this question decades ago, people would answer that there's just no way to stop memory loss that is age-related because it is nature's course. But nowadays, people can take preventive steps to stop or delay memory loss.

Exercise.
Various studies are suggesting that exercise helps promote neuron production in the hippocampus, which is the area of the brain responsible for certain aspects of memory. In one study, people aged 60 and older who were told to exercise an hour, thrice a week, for a period of six months were observed to have the same brain volumes as those of people three years younger.

Play brain games.
Certain software products have been used on people who have suffered strokes or have had traumatic brain injuries to help them regain some of their mental capabilities. Brain Fitness Program work on developing the rate at which the brain processes data, as well as the rate of recollection. Number games like Sudoku, on the other hand, mostly work on strategy and reason.

Eat it off.
Food has an effect on brain health. Eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, like halibut, flaxseed, wild salmon, or walnuts can help boost your concentration, as well as your mood. Even folic acid has been studied and was found to help enhance cognitive functions in elderly subjects. Also, having a drink of wine a day helps slow down the progression of brain degeneration.

Finally, just relax. The more you worry about memory loss, the more you subject yourself to it. High levels of the stress hormone, cortisol, has been linked to smaller hippocampuses. So sit back and improve your brain health by enjoying your favorite game of sudoku with a glass of wine.
