The show is currently one of the highest rated programs on TLC and the fifth season premiere, which aired May 25, 2009, was seen by a record 9.8 million viewers, the most watched show of that evening including broadcast television, twice as many viewers as the show’s previous series high.

The show, which originally aired on Discovery Health but has aired on TLC for the past five seasons, chronicles the daily life of the Gosselin family: parents Jon and Kate and their eight children—a set of fraternal twin girls and a set of sextuplets (three girls and three boys, all fraternal). The show focuses on the challenges of raising multiple children and is filmed three days a week.

In April 2009, celebrity magazines reported that Jon Gosselin was having an affair after he was seen and photographed leaving a party with a woman. The couple denied the affair allegations, stating to various magazines the woman Jon Gosselin left with was a longtime friend. The couple addressed the issue in the season five premiere of their show.

After the affair allegations began in April, the floodgates of public and media scrutiny opened up on Jon and Kate; between April and June 2009 the couple appeared on more celebrity magazine covers and outsold frequent celebrity magazine cover darlings, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. These celebrity magazines include People magazine, Life & Style magazine, OK! magazine and Us Weekly magazine.

In May, Kate Gosselin appeared on the cover of People magazine under the headline “We Might Break-up.” In the cover story, Kate Gosselin spoke openly and directly to the celebrity magazine about the state of the couple’s marriage; Jon remained silent on the matter.

In June Jon Gosselin appeared on the cover of People magazine under the headline “Enough is Enough.” In his cover story, Jon spoke to People magazine and denied the accusation that the couple is exploiting their children by continuing the show.

Also in June, after Jon Gosselin made a flippant statement about the Gosselin kids being rough with the family’s two German Shepherds, the local Humane Society received numerous calls from animal activists concerned about the dogs and children’s safety. Gosselin responded with a statement that there is no mistreatment occurring, People magazine reported.

Most recently, the Gosselins have appeared on the cover of entertainment magazine, Entertainment Weekly, under the headline “Best and Worst Reality TV shows.”
