If there is one thing that many people don't realise that they have to train a dog to do it is climb the stairs. If you have a brand-new puppy then think how big the stairs and look at how strange it would look from their angle. It is always a good idea to make sure you do a bit of training so that you minimise the risk of the dog having an accident when it first starts to use the stairs.

The first thing that you need to be aware of is that your dog may actually be scared of the stairs so when you start training you need to be quite gentle and make sure that you know what you're doing. Start with a dog on the first few steps of the stairs and then gradually put treats higher up so you are encouraging it to go and get it. The dog should get more and more confident it will become more willing to go upstairs and find a treat. It shouldn't take long to train your dog to use the stairs but it is always a good idea to do so just so that you know your dog feels safer.

Like any sort of dog training it is important that you make sure that you don't get frustrated when doing it otherwise this will rub off on the dog and it would be less likely to take any notice of the command you are giving. While there aren't any specific commands when training a dog the same principles still hold. Training a dog can be a testing time but the more frustrated you get is the less likely the dog is to be well-trained and the more likely you are to cause lasting damage to your relationship.
