Patios offer the perfect space and firm ground for your furniture garden needs and plant containers. This will provide a perfect area for dining out in the garden in nice weather, as well as providing a minimum maintenance option for looking after your garden space.

Putting a large patio in your garden instead of having a lawn may be pretty expensive compared to laying turf and borders, but there will be no grass cutting needed, and many patio areas rival the beauty of even the nicest of lawns. Also, any shade created by trees and walls in a small garden can mean that any grass will be overshadowed by moss on your lawn.

If you have a small garden, getting the ground plan right is vital, as there is very little room for error. If possible, create a sheltered seating area next to the main route through the garden. Also, having the paving on a diagonal creates an illusion of more space in your garden area. This can also create a good focal point.

Square concrete slabs, pale coloured to lighten the area can then be edged with brick. Bricks help in lifting areas that are surfaced with cheaper slabs, and will also tie paving to your house and other garden features.

Timber pergolas can be used to form covers over entrance points in your garden, offering a vertical interest, and providing support for your plants. Vertical height and space saving can be combined effectively by using the garden or house walls to support your pergola structures.

Borders can be clothed in planting all round to create a courtyard feel. A large shrub called senkaki is ideal for this purpose, as it has lovely foilage for summertime, beautiful autumn tints, followed by coral pink shoot tips in winter. Take care with plants such as this which can suffer from leaf scorch when sunlight and heat are reflected off a nearby paved surface.

A different idea for a great patio or courtyard layout would be one where the boundaries are totally obscured by planting, with the paving hugging the boundary, leaving the centre of the garden planted as a small island.

All that is left now is to find yourself some great looking patio furniture which will allow you to sit out in your newly created garden, enjoying its soothing tranquility on a lazy summers day, or as a place to sit out with a friend for a pleasant chat and drink.
