Located in the west of Chulalongkorn Hospital at the corner of Rama IV Road and Henri Dunant Road, “Pasteur Institute” is a section of Thai Red Cross where people have cholera, smallpox and rabies treatment. It was established in 1923 as a center that conducts researches and educative sessions about venomous snakes. Mostly its snakes have been provided by farmers and professional snake catchers who are paid according to the size and the specialty of the species. As a result, the snake farm is now home for almost every poisonous species found in Thailand such as king cobra, banded krait, Russell’s viper, the Green Pit Viper and sea snakes.

The snake farm can be visited any day of the week from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm and the extraction of venom from snakes is also shown daily from 10.30 am to 2.00 pm. The venom taken from a snake is sent to a horse farm in Hua Hin where they inject venom into a horse in small amounts. Venom is injected time to time until the horse builds up the immunity. Once this process is completed blood plasmas drawn from the horse is sent back to the snake farm to be purified and tested before sending to hospitals for use in treatments. Over the past years this institution has been providing a great service for many health departments and hospitals. It also engages people in many educative programs and researches in order to broaden awareness about snake world and to save snake bite victims.
