Overcome Sick Thoughts and Boost Your Immune System
After being diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in 1995 I had a cold about seventy-five percent of the year, which weren’t fun at all. After watching the movie, “The Secret,” it came clear to me that my thoughts created my health. Over the years of having many colds I held a strong belief that I was prone to catching them and the flu bug. There was also a tendency for me to think about having a cold when I heard people were coming down with the flu or a cold.
The following are 4 things I apply and practice whenever I start to entertain any sick thoughts:
1. Think healthy thoughts like“I am healthy and I am strong.“
2. Act healthy and happy - not mop around and act as if I’m already sick
3. Place attention on what I’m doing - gets me into the present moment and off my sick thoughts.
4. Check and make sure I’m taking the time for introspection/meditation/gratitude and there might be a need for me to do it more often: Each section of my day (morning, afternoon, and before bed) I will reflect on how I’m doing inside, it might be for only five to ten minutes, but just taking that short time allows me to see if I’m tired and needing a rest for few minutes by connecting with my breath. This allows me to let go off thoughts in my mind that are unproductive and useful in my day. Secondly I go over in my mind what I’m grateful for, my family and children, being able to get out of bed in the morning to be apart of this world.
Being in the present is a much healthier way to live and a wonderful thing.
Testing my strength
The month of October there was a lot of talk about the H1N1 virus. This became a challenge for me to focus my mind on healthy thoughts and out of fear of catching the flu, which I admit went in that direction for a week’s time and I became sick because of it. But now I am back on track focusing and implementing ways to keep my body’s immune system healthy and strong.
This includes:
1. Eat fruits and vegetables
2. Drink lots of water - six to eight glasses a day
3. Take essential fatty acids, omega -3, 6, 9 - I’m back taking cod liver oil to boost my immune system, I’ve been told that vitamin D is affective against this new virus.
4. Not over eat on sugary foods and pop - will decrease the effectiveness of my immune system.
5. Good hand washing: before we eat and after an activity, especially if we are out and about.
6. Keep our house clean: especially areas that are touched a lot like door handles.
Most importantly:
7. Stopping an activity at the given time I had set: It is okay if you are finishing something up and needing a few more minutes. This rule is very important for me prior to going to bed at night because I’ve set for 8:30 PM as my cut off time for work, so I have the time to settle my mind by reading spiritual material, practice the healing codes, and connecting with my breath. Doing this has helped me to get a restful sleep and more able to get up in the morning to do reflection, meditation and yoga.
8. Exercise: I go for a walk with the kids during the day and for the last 20 years I’ve implemented hatha yoga into my day because of its gentle nature. You can pick one that works best for you, it might be just walking to the end of the street and back, just monitor your energy and not over do it because this will create resitance from you to exercise the next day or the next.
Following certain ways of stopping my sick thoughts before they become internal inside of me have helped my energy and decreased the amount of colds I receive, especially around busy times of the year. This also holds true when I implement certain measures to keep my body’s immune system healthy and strong. I talk more about this in my book, 12 Things You Can do to Gain Energy and Be Healthy and my other book, Better Than A Double Espresso. All the best in your health and remember, Everyday and everyway I am healthy and I am strong.
